TY, reaganaut. I know quite a bit about them having grown up right next to Holy Ground, Kirtland BUT had never seen that list or the term “investigator”. (among other things that continue to amaze me!) You all are a wealth of info!
Back in the day I believe the only other info out there was from the Tanners. They opened up the can of worms, so to speak!
The more someone learns about Mormonism the more shocked they become.
I skimmed the comments there, immediately noticing the familiar names.
AT ONCE I knew these were parody comments, with the exception of one or two.
After a while, love 'em or hate 'em you get to know people's writing style
and unless someone was completely ignorant of FR there's no way those
comments could be seen as legitimate.
While I disagree with the poster pinging Jim and his subsequent comments
I don't see this "offsite spoofing" as anything sinister. It's been
done to me often (though not in this case) and I'm always amused by
it. Maybe a bit flattered and gratified that I riled someone up
enough to bother. But I never worried that anyone would think it was
really me in my proper person. Wrong style, wrong phrasing, wrong points.
While I agree that the poster's ping to Jim was malicious I
don't think the parody posts are that big a deal. Certainly Jim
would not be fooled by them. Even someone with no particular fondness
for you would know the comments attributed to you were not made by you. ;-)
The Tanners were the first modern ministry to the LDS (there is an online collection of nineteenth century ‘anti’ material that is a facinating read).
Then there was Ed Decker and Bill McKeever, the Higleys, and a few others.
Now, is is all over the ‘net.
When i left, the internet was still young (early early 1990’s) so I still had to do my research the old fashioned way, looking up sources by hand, tracking down books, cross referencing. It took almost a year of full time study before I found everything that can now be found in a few hours online.
The internet is doing a lot to get the truth of Mormonism out there, to stop people from joining, and to get people out.
Most major ministries to the LDS have an online component, and that is a good thing.
That obedience thing always got me. Besides, feigned obedience is how those trapped 60% of apostates and inactives conduct themselves. Passive and subdued but not obedient.
Me? I cannot erase my past or my heritage. However, I can think of nothing so distasteful and ugly as to go along to get along when deep inside I know and have known for fifty years that is is all a crock of offal.
And I praise that certain higher power for sending us Al Gore and the internet as it has helped millions of doubters learn the truth in a quiet and private way.
I am just proud that all my kids and DW "got it" early on and all have left the church. My son was determined to prove to me that I was wrong, so he went to BYU and also on a mission. It only took him a short time to figure it all out. Now he asks me why I didn't tell him.

Of course it was obvious that the comments over there were not the work of the people implied, but you obviously understood my objection to how it was handled, and that was the whole point. THAT’S what I was objecting to.

We can't, unless FR switches from HTTP to HTTPS.
But simulating FR would be a big job for a phisher. The average phisher is much more interested in arranging a wire transfer from your bank to Lagos or Semipalatinsk. That's why banks use HTTPS — your browser will complain that the SSL certificate the phisher is using doesn't match the bank's and will refuse to complete the connection unless you approve an exception. My bank goes even further. It shows me a secret picture every time I log in. A phisher might have every detail about my bank's web site down pat, but he still wouldn't know which picture to show me.
A simpler hack on FR, which requires the real FR to be running, would be to hack your DNS so that FR goes to the phisher's proxy server, which faithfully relays (and logs) all communication between you and the real FR, except when it doesn't.

I couldn’t live the lie either. I loved being LDS, then it all came crashing down when I set out to prove the ‘antis’ wrong and thank God it did.
Now I am part of the body of Christ, not a ‘church’ as the LDS use the term.
There are several online and in print (very inexpensive) books available from them. All of their stuff is well written and wonderfully documented.
Professionally, I am a Historian (Medieval Religion) and in my professional opinion Jerald and Sandra Tanner are some of the best historians I have ever read, even better than a lot of PhDs.

That happens in a lot of areas. When I was at BYU, anything in the library that mentioned them or countered the teachings was removed or had pages missing. It did make it more difficult, but not impossible to verify some of their statements.
Sandra Tanner (an IRL friend) is the sweetest, kindest, Christian grandmother type you could ever hope to meet. Which is funny since she is painted as the spawn of Satan by the LDS.
