China to launch 1st aircraft carrier in 2011

China plans to launch an aircraft carrier for training within this year after completing work to repair it which it bought from the former Soviet Union, Japans Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reported Tuesday.
Quoting military experts, Yomiuri said, The Chinese Navy will begin operation of the aircraft carrier which it bought in 2002 after repair work in Dalian, northeastern Chinas Liaoning Province.
The 65,000-ton aircraft carrier is 304 meters long. Construction began in 1985, but stopped with a 70-percent completion as the Soviet Union collapsed.
If operation begins, it will be the first aircraft carrier of China which has set the goal of building Mighty Navy, Yomiuri said.
Military experts said that a photo taken last month shows that the aircraft carrier is topped with a three-dimension radar which did not appear in August last year, it said.
The radar is capable of not only controlling takeoff and landing of aircraft but also detecting approaching enemy planes and missiles, Yomiuri said.
P!
Click on pic for past Navair pings.
Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
Why do the Chiese always come off like carictures of themselves even when doing something serious? Reading their press releases is like reading a string of bad "AYBABTU" jokes. "We build Mighty Navy, have great Golden Prosperity!" LOL
Wowwww...(Do I really need to add a sarcasm tag?)
No biggie...us carrier operations and sorties in the millions...China 0... good luck fellas you have 70 years of catch up...
Sending out new target silhouette to USN attack submarines ASAP!
“Scratch one flattop!” USN 1942
This is another ‘benefit’ of Free Trade.
The ChiComs have no intentions of sending their new carrier out against ours. They’ve got good subs that can do the work. Their carrier is meant to intimidate Taiwan and project power throughout Southeast Asia and against Japan.
Underestimate the Chinese at your own risk.
Any idea what carrier they are comparing it to in the table in that picture? My Korean is non-existant.
USS George Washington.
ah...another thing to be grateful for.....
I am NOT a newly trained Chinese fighter pilot assigned to the very first Chinese aircraft carrier...
“This is another benefit of Free Trade.”

Yep. It can launch aircraft or be used to haul containers of “free trade” crap for US discount stores. It’s compliment of
helicopters can be contracted by US retailers to deliver right
to the consumers doorstep.
Don’t worry about the machine guns.... their just for show.
Nine years to finish a carrier that was already 70% completed.
Perhaps they had to replace all of the drywall.
Thanks!
The Russians didn't properly mothball the vessel & she had an incomplete propulsion system. I think the Chinese had a lot that they had to 'undo' before they could complete the vessel. Add in their lack of experience and you get these delays. All-in-all it might not prove to be a bad job.
They had to completely refurbish the closed circuit broadcast studio in the XO's quarters.
Yep. People underestimated the country ran by that guy with the Charlie Chaplin mustache too.
Bottom line: The US is spending itself into utter bankruptcy. Britain is decommissioning its aircraft carriers. Meanwhile, China is building an aircraft carrier.
I see a pattern here, and I don't like it.
CC-3 Saratoga was near complete in 1922. It still took 5 years to finish it as CV-3. And back in those days Carriers were a lot simpler; just put a flat topped plane box on a hull.
