ESPN ^

Michigan has fired football coach Rich Rodriguez after his third season ended with a school-record 38-point loss in the Gator Bowl, Fox 2 TV in Detroit is reporting. The report comes after Rodriguez met with athletic director Dave Brandon earlier Tuesday. Members of the football team are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, according to another report out of Ann Arbor. Michigan's Gator Bowl loss to Mississippi State knocked Rodriguez's overall record to 15-22 with college football's winningest program. Michigan will owe the coach $2.5 million to buy out the final three years of his contract.

At some point they might realize that the coach is not the problem up there in Michigan (or Notre Dame). It's the cold. Top recruits don't really want to play there when they can go to the warm, southern schools with lax academic standards and rowdy girls.

Rodriguez couldn't get the athletes needed to compete.

I understand that Stanford coach and Michigan alum Jim Harbaugh is NOT interested, and will probably end up in the NFL.

Maybe he can get the Pitt job. That would be fun at the Backyard Brawl...

I kinda wonder if Rich Rodriguez will end up at University of Connecticut since now there is a opening in the football program for a new head coach, with Randy Edsall has left to go to University of Maryland.

Looks like in retrospect he should have just stayed in West Virginia. They must be getting a kick out of this.

Not sure about the weather aspect. “Top” recruits with visions of the NFL are going to have to get used to the cold at some point.

And actually Rodriguez got a lot of skilled offensive players. What he didn’t get (or spend time recruiting, evidently) was linemen and linebackers.

He seemed to do alright at West Virginia (Morgantown is not exactly paradise). He is probably questioning why he ever left there in the first place.

Hell no!

He's a loser and unloyal.

That's only marginally better than being a woman beater.

Possible, although I hear that Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni is a candidate for the UConn job.

I guess that explains why Oregon is playing for a national championship.

The 2.5 mil will at least be a comforter.

Surprised he left WV. Of course I didn’t think Spurrier would leave UF either.

There has definitely been a shift away from the Big 10 this decade.

OSU still turns out a lot of NFL players, but the SEC, Big 12 and PAC 10 may be more appealing to young athletes, particularly those more prone to be defensive players.

Of course the Mid-West, in general is the part of the country that is declining the most, in terms of economy, population, etc., so it stands to reason it is also impacting the athletics.

Oregon = Nike $$$

Also, I should probably have included the West Coast schools in my statement.

Basically, I think kids are less inclined to want to go freeze their fannies off in Michigan, unless their from there.

Boise St. doesn’t seem to have any problems, and Idaho is about as cold as it gets.

The problem is Michigan and Notre Dame are no longer the glamor schools they were in the past. In decades past, if you had offers from Michgan and say Mississippi St, the choice was easy—you went to Michigan. Today it’s sort of a toss up.

And there lies the real problem. Michgan and Notre Dame have to compete with many more schools for recruits, and they never developed a good recruiting program beyond “hey, we’re Notre Dame, what else do you need to know?”
