Senator Jim DeMint: Conservative Of The Year
Human Events ^ | 1/3/10 | Erik Erickson

Posted on 01/03/2011 7:55:12 AM PST by pissant

“I want to sincerely congratulate Senator DeMint on this award. Fully aware that Human Events cannot give the award to me every year, Human Events has made the only other choice they could make. Tough, courageous, rock-solid and unflinching, Jim DeMint charts the way for all of us in truly historic times.”

— Rush Limbaugh Conservative of the Year, 2007

He did not start out a conservative fighter. He was no warrior when he first arrived on Capitol Hill in 1999. Jim DeMint had replaced Rep. Bob Inglis in South Carolina’s 4th Congressional District. Inglis had vacated the seat to run a losing race against Senator Ernest Hollins.

DeMint’s tenure started out like that of most freshmen congressmen — anonymous and committed to bringing home the bacon, much like Rep. Inglis who, when Senator DeMint moved up to the Senate, moved back into his old House seat until the tea party movement threw him out in 2010.

Something happened to DeMint though. In a National Journal article last month, Michael Hirsh fingered the fight over No Child Left Behind, which DeMint originally opposed, but then ultimately supported.

Can he explain the unanimous consent for passing Monsanto’s food bill? Unanimous means DeMint voted for the bill after voting against it.

If it walks like a crawfish, and tumbles over like a crawfish, then,it must be a crawfish.

And yet,

DeMint: Palin has done more for the GOP ‘than anyone since Reagan ...Dec 29, 2010 ... The two have never met, but Sarah Palin’s star power hasn’t gone unnoticed by Sen. Jim DeMint.

My favorite section of the Erickson article:

...“Co-option is coercion. Washington operates on a favor-based economy and for every earmark, committee assignment or fancy title that’s given, payback is expected in return. The chits come due when the roll call votes begin. This is how big-spending bills that everyone always decries in public always manage to pass with just enough votes. But someone can’t be bribed if they aren’t for sale.”...

Yeah, in the same article he praised Romney. No one claims DeMint doesn’t have any flaws.

Thomas Sowell is conservative of the year.

No one makes the case for conservatism simpler and clearly as Mr Sowell.

Jim DeMint has more political courage than any other member of the Senate. He understands America's dire situation and actually wants to save her.

I love this guy.

If there is any common sense in anyone that is left in America, who is the closest to being a real down to earth American left with this pile of crap? If those conservatives have not got it yet they never will and between bitching and closed minds we are in trouble.

Palin for President.

The key word is conservative. Palin may be the most popular celebrity, but that’s it.

Stop lying to yourself. You are killing any shred of credibility you have with this posting. The guy you are pushing, DeMint, isn't so delusional and knows the truth.

LOST, Amnesty, carbon caps, Title IX, TARP, etc. She should run for the democratic nomination.

Speaking of LOST, consider what your man DeMint, for all his holds on legislation reputation, allowed through the lame duck session: extended unemployment, DADT and START.

Allowed? You mean those things he both urged his colleagues to vote against and the ones he indeed voted against. And you can’t run a filibuster unless you have 40 friends along for the ride. He didn’t

And you can’t run a filibuster unless you have 40 friends along for the ride.

The article discusses holds, not filibusters. DeMint didn't put a hold on these bills and force the Senate to override him. He could also have recruited several other senators to do the same thing. This would have tied up the Senate long enough in that last week to kill the bills. That would have taken heroism.
