Georgia Democrats enter the upcoming 2011 session of the General Assembly reeling from a series of defections and facing an uphill climb toward relevance.
The once-dominant party holds 85 of 236 seats in the House and Senate, Democrats’ lowest ebb since Reconstruction. And the number has been slipping.
Since the November election when the party lost control of all statewide offices, nine Democratic legislators have become Republicans, including Athens Rep. Doug McKillip, who switched less than a month after his colleagues elected him chairman of the House Democrats.
Now party leaders are scrambling to find new growth strategies while attempting to be more than a speed bump for the Republican majority.
The task is daunting. Mirroring a trend across the South, much of the state party’s white, rural base has fled to the Republican Party and Democrats have struggled to find attractive candidates for statewide posts they held for generations.
Newly elected House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, D-Atlanta, admits her party’s primary function in the short term will be as a check on the Republican majority’s power.

The defections by rural, white Democrats continue a trend that’s made the Georgia Democrats a more urban and African-American party. As a result, the power of its African-American Democratic leaders has grown while the party’s statewide influence has dwindled.

Fifteen years ago, African-Americans made up a third of Democrats in the House. Now they are a two-thirds majority in the House Democratic Caucus and hold most of the leadership positions. In the Senate, African-Americans make up more than half of Democrats compared to one in four in 1996.

Not much energy required to figure it out. Democrats have become Marxists and most of the people of Georgia have figured it out.

The fact is (please don’t get discouraged here) if every Democrat disappeared, Satan would get up something else to destroy our freedom.
I just want it to be made clear what we’re up against so we know what to do.
Pres. Obama and the Democrat Party doesn’t care much for the “rural” Democrats. They’re more interested in the urban population centers.
Affiliations built up over generations take generations to undo. In the '70s, the Democrat Party turned anti-prosperity with its adoption of environmental wackoism. In the 70's, the Democrat Party turned explicitly anti-white and anti-male with its policies of affirmative discrimation on behalf (mostly of women), Blacks and later other favored racial minorities.
At the latest, from 1980 on, a white, especially a white male, who voted for the Democrat Party is the practical equivalent of a Jew voting for Hitler. It's taken 30 years for the ice dam to finally break.
As an old guy, I remember when the Solid South meant the Democrats had the South locked up politically. In the Future, the Solid South, will mean the party of Lincoln has the South locked up politically. Just a couple of years ago, the liberal rags were telling us that the GOP was going to be a regional party. Now, who's the regional party? The Dem's have the West Coast and the North East and big cities.
Obama has just made the result of the Democrats long term policies obvious to everyone. Thus, the ice dam breaks, sweeping Democrats down river and out to sea. This isn't going to change soon. Obama has shown how no one can trust so-called 'conservative' Democrats. They vote the party line just as hard as Nancy Pelosi does. Kennesaw isn't about to elect Nancy Pelosi.
That's absurd; after the Civil War the Republican party was, in the South, a black party. And it was held in power by the Union Army until a controvesrial presidential election resulted in a back room deal to discontinue it. Consequently the KKK suppressed the black Republican vote in the South, and the result was the solid Democratic South - in which the Democratic primary was the actual deciding election, and the general election was a mere formality. It has taken 150 years, but in the South the identities of the two parties have, in that sense, almost inverted.Martin Luther King was a registered Republican; in 1960 Nixon actually expected to be competitive for the black vote.

Could we have used more Tea Party wins? Absolutely. I wish it would go faster, but for politics, this is faster than we could ever have expected.

You’re absolutely right, and when blacks start to show some independent political thought then CNN runs specials like “Racism in America”, the History Channel shows “The Klan; a Secret History”, and the blacks run back to the party of Southern lynch mobs, segregation, and urban abortion...
Congress adjourned in March 1865, prior to Robert E. Lee’s surrender, and did not reconvene until December. During that interval, President Andrew Johnson permitted the creation of white-only governments in the South headed (in every state except Tennessee) by former supporters of the Confederacy.
When Congress reassembled, the South’s representatives included the Confederate vice president, six members of the Confederate Cabinet, and four Confederate generals.
In 1866, after the president had denounced Congressional efforts to extend citizenship rights to former slaves, claiming that they would “destroy our institutions and change the character of our government,” Republicans in Congress seized control of Reconstruction from the president.

Obama carried those Red States and IN with a heavy black turnout. He didn’t have a record then. He does now and he’s a known quantity - a northern black liberal. If the GOP nominates a good candidate AND the economy and exploding debt are still an issue come 2012, he’s eminently beatable. With poll ratings at around 40%, that’s not good re-election territory for an incumbent.
