8 botched environmental forecasts (Why are people still taking these 'scientists' seriously?)
American Thinker ^ | 12/31/2010 | Ric Moran

Fox News has an all-star grouping of environmental forecasts that turned out to be so off base that the only question remains is why are the people who made them are still taken seriously?

A couple of examples:

1. Within a few years "children just aren't going to know what snow is." Snowfall will be "a very rare and exciting event." Dr. David Viner, senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, interviewed by the UK Independent, March 20, 2000.

Um...no. Kids in England today know very well what snow is. They've had to shovel so much of it off the walk this winter they probably want to find Dr. Viner and throttle him.

2. "[By] 1995, the greenhouse effect would be desolating the heartlands of North America and Eurasia with horrific drought, causing crop failures and food riots...[By 1996] The Platte River of Nebraska would be dry, while a continent-wide black blizzard of prairie topsoil will stop traffic on interstates, strip paint from houses and shut down computers." Michael Oppenheimer, published in "Dead Heat," St. Martin's Press, 1990.

Read what this mealy mouthed little snit has to say to defend himself:

Oppenheimer told FoxNews.com that he was trying to illustrate one possible outcome of failing to curb emissions, not making a specific prediction. He added that the gist of his story had in fact come true, even if the events had not occurred in the U.S.

Um, no again. Where are the food riots? The "black blizzards?" that will shut down computers? Or strip paint from houses? Or stop traffic on highways?

Wrong, wrong, wrong, and wrong again.

Here's one from our old friend Paul Ehrlich, who famously predicted in the 1970's that both China and India would suffer famines by 1985 where hundreds of millions of people would die. Both China and India are now self sufficient in food production.

Here, Ehrlich points his mini-brain in the direction of England:

7. "By the year 2000 the United Kingdom will be simply a small group of impoverished islands, inhabited by some 70 million hungry people ... If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000."

How about that one, Paul?

"When you predict the future, you get things wrong," Ehrlich admitted, but "how wrong is another question. I would have lost if I had had taken the bet. However, if you look closely at England, what can I tell you? They're having all kinds of problems, just like everybody else."

Incredible. How wrong are you? Fantastically, stupendously, egregiously, idiotically wrong, that's how much. "All kinds of problems" is light years distant from "England will not exist in the year 2000." It's not close, even by cosmic standards. You can look as closely as you'd like at England and glean absolutely nothing that would make your prediction anything more than the drooling ranting of a clown.

Global Warming is not about Science or Climate. It is a plot. A hoax. And a Scam.

It makes liberals feel good to be reminded of how evil freedom and capitalism have made our country so they can justify their jet-set and McMansion lifestyles.

Yes.

To quote Judge Judy: "Follow the money."

These 'prognosticators' are in it for one thing -- grant money. And the bigger the perceived/claimed threat, the more grants they can amass.

That is the problem with human predictions they are flawed. I have a friend who can tell a mean fortune with tarot cards but he told me that God is the only one who can the real future. There is divine will at play in the universe and that is why fortune telling is prohibited in the Bible. Human attempts are always influenced by the thoughts and opinions of the person making the predictions. A deeply religious person would perhaps even see other potentially more sinister origins for some predictions. While a scientific theory or prediction can be argued as being different they are still subject to that same influences. Once you walk across the line from what is provable to what is pure theory a scientist is about as reliable as my friend reading tarot cards. These predictions in the article were either cynical attempts at manipulation or the conceit of the person making them.

“... It is a plot. A hoax. And a Scam.”

It is all of the above, without a doubt. Just look at the prospective results of the plot/hoax/scam/scheme: decreased public mobility, ability to communicate, and ability to assemble and resist. All point to better/easier control of “US”, the people. You’d think that the people, even the “dunderheads”, would catch on at some point. But, on the other hand, you have a lot of people who just don’t care one way or the other, and they are willing to accept anything.

Any question about how wrong Ehrlich could be was settled by Julian Simon.

Obviously Al Gore isn’t taking one of his predictions seriously. In his movie he showed large sections of the US coastline that would soon be under water due to melting polar caps. However, Al recently bought a $9 million seaside mansion in California. Wouldn’t you think that if he seriously believed sea levels were imminently rising he would not have bought a seaside home?

“Global Warming is not about Science or Climate. It is a plot. A hoax. And a Scam.”

Marxists and democrats created the global warming hoax for the sole purpose of destroying capitalism: Anyone think it a funny coincidence that one of the main products of industry (capitalism) , CO2, is the culprit that is destroying the planet by causing global warming?

Global warming is a hoax. This is why the democrat mainstream media changed the name of global warming to climate change.

It’s presented as “let us care for each other by caring for our environment” to “you are worthless souls and need to be sacrificed so the elite can enjoy the view”.

This book needs to be updated in order to add Al Gore on the list:

Global warming is a hoax. This is why the democrat mainstream media changed the name of global warming to climate change.

All of the posts are missing WHY all the Marxist Communist Radical freaks like Obama and Gore are clinging to the lies.

It's about increasing your electric bill, you gas prices, your costs of food. WHERE will all the money go from all the increased costs that YOU PAY?

You have to ask the question before you can answer it.
