A rookie police officer responding to a domestic violence call in suburban Dallas was shot to death trying to protect an 11-year-old girl from her mother's gun-wielding ex-boyfriend, a department spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Tiara Ellis Richard said Arlington officer Jillian Michelle Smith, 24, was shot by Barnes Samuel Nettles on Tuesday night as she sought to shield the girl from the 38-year-old man after he entered the apartment of Kimberly Deshay Carter, 29. After shooting Smith, Nettles shot Carter to death in a back bedroom, then returned to the living room, where he killed himself, Richard said.
"It appears (Smith) was moving in the direction of the child in an effort to protect her and, in that process, she was shot," Richard said, citing the girl's statement and forensic evidence.

As a lifelong Washingtonian I am frequently embarrassed by the actions of Washington voters as well as our 'elected' officials here, but never more so than at times like this. This animal should never have been released from prison and this murder of this fine Officer was entirely preventable and would never have occurred if Washington State was not the soft-on-crime, Leftist-voting State that it is.
My great hope is that our dear friends in the Lone Star State might understand that there are still Conservatives here in Washington who would never have allowed this to happen were it not for the hard-Left majority in Western Washington. We're trying to make Washington a better place but when we're outnumbered at every election, the going is very tough.
Please know that Conservatives in Washington grieve with you for your terrible loss.

Leftists in states such as Washington consider themselves to be so much more enlightened than Texans. They let their criminals roam free, so they can come to our state and destroy families. Gov. Gregoire and her liberal toadies are responsible for atrocities such as this.

I had several classes with Jillian, you could not imagine a more delightful young woman, this is such a tragic loss. She gave her life protecting the child.
Filthy leftist scum in W. Washington keep voting in leftist scum just like them, the main reason this type of outrage keeps happening. Another aspect to the story is the girlfriend of the perp getting involved with a piece of garbage like that, endangering herself and her kid. Why do women get involved with complete loser scumbags like this?

Thank you for your kind words. The only person to blame is the monster who made the decision to pull out a gun and start shooting. Yeah, he should have been behind bars, but the decisions were his to make. He chose wrong and now three people are dead because of those bad choices.
This officer was only 24 years old. She completed her field training on 12/13/10. According to local news reports in the DFW metro area, Officer Jillian Smith was going to the apartment to take a domestic violence report from the other female victim. A ‘low priority’ call, according to the Arlington police chief.
She had wanted to be a police officer since the sixth grade. She told friends and family being an Arlington police officer was her dream job. She left this earth protecting the citizens and community she loved, in the capacity she had dreamed of since childhood. Prayers up for the family and friends she leaves behind.
It is sad that any officer, regardless of age has to answer a domestic, even to take a report, without backup.

Very sad. It appears the dead officer is a female...I personally feel females have no damn business as police officers in the field...
By all accounts, officer Smith had landed a dream job.
Officials said she became interested in police work in the sixth grade while participating in the DARE program.
After graduating from Seguin High School in 2005, she received a bachelor's degree in criminology from the University of Texas at Arlington in August 2009. She graduated from the police academy in August, joined the Police Department in February and was released from field training Dec. 13, Richard said.
She is the eighth Arlington officer to die in the line of duty in the department's history and the second to die this year.
Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck said he met Smith at her academy class graduation and will always remember "how she stood out with her beautiful smile."
"You could tell she had achieved what she was working hard for a long time," Cluck said. "The only reason she became a police officer, the only reason she went to that house that night, was to help other people."

I think it’s a complete travesty that the filth who committed these crimes was out on any bail at all, let alone one as low as $5000. From what I glean from the article, he was previously accused having tried to kill Ms.Carter’s mother. Wasn’t that once considered a serious charge?
