Mitt Romney has had a pretty swell time of it in 2010. The former presidential contender has been ambidextrous in his political maneuvers, carefully challenging President Obama on key economic issues that play to his own strengths as a pragmatic technocrat. The success generated by his book No Apology earlier this year seemed to verify his place as the GOP’s resident wonk. The book even won praise from detractors as a thoughtful policy manifesto. As Republicans rode a wave of voter dissatisfaction towards taking back the House, Romney faithfully played the role of good soldier, being generous in word and wealth to GOP candidates all over the map who enlisted his help, all the while building a collection of chits likely to come in handy for what is an all but sure presidential run in 2012.

I agree with your assessment of at least some FR posters. I don’t know how representative FR posters are of the Republican vote IRL. Freepers are obviously more politically aware than the average voter. I doubt most Republican voters are already locked into a candidate for 2012.

I wouldn't vote for any of them even if Palin didn't exist.
One thing that isn’t often addressed in these early discussions of the Republican primaries: which candidates will be strong in the blue states? Who will win California, Illinois and New York?
I live in a very red state and don’t really have a feel for who might be strong in the blue states, but they also hold primaries and elect delegates to the Republican convention.
McCain was mostly elected by blue states.
What is wrong with conservatives? What, do they hate free health care for everyone? What haters.
Mittens is so and generous with other people’s lives and money. And then there are the conservatives who keep harping on that old fashioned idea of self determination! We have our Mexican state to take care of!
Conservatives don’t have doubts about Romney.
Don’t let the Rino/Dino axis push any candidates forward like they did with McShame....no to Myth-a-minute and Huck-a-fathead!

Right now I wouldn't choose any one of them, including Palin, over any other. It's way too early. Right now, the current lay of the political landscape seems to indicate Palin can waltz to the nomination if she wants it. But a lot can, and will, change between now and the first caucuses and primaries in 2012.
Unlike most here who bitch and moan if anyone even so much as looks cross-eyed at Palin, I want her to be battle tested in the rough-n-tumble of debates and primaries. I want her to prove to me that she's got what it takes. It isn't enough for me that someone espouse conservative ideas. I want to know they have the substance to govern wisely. The stakes are just way too high to settle for anything less.
Sometime in mid to late 2011, the field of Republican candidates will announce and have debates. Then we'll see.
