An East Coast blizzard that has forced nearly 7,000 flight cancelations will leave many travelers stranded through the end of the week.
Runways were expected to reopen Monday evening at several major airports in the Northeast. But canceled flights into and out of Philadelphia, New York and Boston left hundreds of thousands of people scrambling for a way home. The storm and its aftermath could end up costing the airlines $100 million, one analyst predicted.
The challenge for the airlines goes beyond weather. Flights are usually full this time of year, making it difficult to rebook travelers affected by a cancellation. Seats are even more scarce than in past years because the airline industry has reduced the number of flights and grounded planes to save money and drive up prices.

Flights resume at NY airport following blizzard

NEW YORK Planes have begun landing again at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after a blizzard clobbered the Northeast and led authorities to suspend all flight operations.
Steve Coleman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, says one flight arrived at JFK shortly before 7 p.m. Monday. Coleman says it’s a Royal Jordanian flight.
Flights were expected to begin arriving at Newark and LaGuardia airports Monday evening.
Blizzard of 2010: Has global warming turned Americans into winter wimps?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20101227/ts_csm/352216
Atlanta Maybe it was those warm, snow-bare years and the impression that global warming was in the process of turning Minneapolis into Miami, but what’s with the hyperbolic national reaction to the “snowball express” winter storm of 2010?
The hand-wringing by news anchors up and down the East Coast was on Sunday compounded by the postponement before a flake of snow had fallen of the Philadelphia Eagles-Minnesota Vikings pro football game, causing Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell to fume: “This is football; football is played in bad weather.”
Yes, the early winter snow storm is a doozy, dropping Christmas snow on parts of the South for the first time since right after the Civil War and wrapping parts of the Northeast in nearly three feet of snow. Six states declared states of emergency and 4,000 flights were canceled. An A train in Queens got stuck and stranded 500 passengers for seven hours on Sunday.
“Back in the Day, they didn’t cancel the bivouac at Valley Forge or the War for Independence over a few flakes of snow or a strong breeze,” writes commenter Eephus on Philadelphia Daily News. “Washington crossed the Delaware in worse weather than this. What a nation of quiche eaters we’ve become”
Meanwhile, in Pittsburgh, we’re supposed to be at or near 50 degrees by the weekend...right on time for the Winter Classic hockey game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitols, which is being held outdoors. This oughta be interesting. There had better be some good refrigeration for the ice or the team will be skating on slush.

No snow this year in Tulsa as of yet.
There's a bit of a chill in the air lately though. ; )
Note to traveling public: In the future stay home and starve the beast.
Its Bush’s fault.
Makes those cars harder to steal....
Up here at Logan in Boston and the Manchester regional airpt in NH, DC and Philly flights are OK, but NYC and Newark flights are cancelled.
Jet Blue has cancelled almost all flights to/from Logan.
I read that commuter train passengers were kept on a stranded train for six hours without heat or bathrooms.
I don’t think I could hold it for six hours.
What do you think that they did about the need to pee? Open the door?
“Back in the Day, they didnt cancel the bivouac at Valley Forge or the War for Independence over a few flakes”
Hmmm. Lets see. Last time I checked back in the day they didn’t travel at 550 miles per hour at 30,000 feet either.
One of our daughters up here from NYC for a brief Christmas visit was supposed to fly back to JFK yesterday. But now she’s got two extra days of vacation, and will fly back tomorrow.
She’s not complaining.
I wish this sh*t had hit on election day 2012....
Norm was commenting on the post just above...about what Pussies NFL players have become.
"How much longer we gonna be up here? My interview was last Friday. Oh, that reminds me of another story..."
Yes. One can open the doors between the cars.
