Eagles quarterback Michael Vick is having a phenomenal season, of course, but hes still a divisive figure. Some credit him for making the most of another chance following his prison sentence, while others still cant bring themselves to forgive Vick for the suffering he inflicted on innocent dogs. But according to information reported last night by Peter King of Sports Illustrated, Vick has at least one supporter in high places: President Barack Obama.
Obama, it seems, is squarely in the credit Vick for making good on another chance camp. King said last night that Obama called Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and commended him for giving Vick the second chance many ex-prisoners never receive. King reiterated that report in a later tweet:
Yes, Obama called Eagle owner Jeffrey Lurie to praise the Eagles for giving Vick a chance. Said too many prisoners never get fair 2nd chance.
As Toni Monkovic of The New York Times Fifth Down blog soon pointed out, Obamas position would likely prove as divisive as Vicks story. Of course, nothing can undo what Vick did to so many dogs, and the presidents stance here will make it appear to some that hes an animal abuse apologist. Others will see it as welcome opposition to the way the U.S. prison system currently operates.
One Pro Football Talk commenter noted that Vicks story doesnt exactly serve as an accurate barometer for what most ex-prisoners post-prison lives will be like, since he has extraordinarily rare skills that helped him land his second chance. Still, if Vick can keep up what hes doing on the field (and stay on the right side of the law, of course), perhaps he could serve as an important model of what someone can still achieve even after theyve paid the price for enormous mistakes.
And well give Obama credit for coming forward (well, to Lurie, anyway) with an opinion that may not necessarily be the most popular. We can only hope and, thus far, have reason to believe that Vick will continue to show why he expressed it.
Of course Obama suppports Vick — Vick is black.
That’s all that matters to Obama.
Both of them, one day will have to answer to a Higher Power.
Well, if this is true, then I will surely have to reform my opinion of Vick....two for the price of one, no extra penny required!
Oh, dawg....
If not Kennedy, why Vick?
Why am I not surprised? These scumbags are like two peas in a pod. Most normal people would not want to be associated with the likes of Vick, but then he married moosehead so what do I know? Maybe the man simply has bad taste or is a sociopath who can’t tell right from wrong. Almost everything obuma says and does would fit in either category.
I am a 62 yo life long football fan. I remember watching games where they wore leather helmets. I remember when the face guard was a new thing.
Michael Vick is a low life dog torturing and killing scum felon.
I quit watching any NFL anything when they allowed him back in.
I only missed it the first year.
F em ALL.
It SO figures that the messiah “king” obammy would “support” Vick.
At the time Jeffrey Lurie had trouble articulating why he was extending the opportunity to Michael Vick. I’ll admit that I didn’t think it made much sense at the time, but once McNabb left, and Kevin Colb went down, Vick got his second, second-chance. He’s made the most of it to say the least.
IOW’s Lady Luck smiled on Jeffrey Lurie’s decision. I guess I’d rather be lucky than good.
I wonder if Lurie,Reid & Vick will still be the toast of the town if they go one and done in the playoffs.
It’s a black thang. Honky, cracker wouldn’t understand.
Its not likely that Obama would ever call Tom Brady.
Mikey Vickie got a jock strap from The One? How sweet it is!
crawl over your dying mother to rape your prepubescent developmentally challenged sister??
what???
this guy is pure scum...
Obama understands because he knows what it’s like to be treated “like a dog”.
Plus, muslims hate dogs.
Why oh why am I not suprised?
Michael Vick is a god!
Here is a guy doing something manly, the media gets all over him for what? Betting? Having a good time?
