MINNEAPOLIS-- Dozens of former employees, their families and friends gathered in front of Chipotle in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday afternoon to protest the recent firings of nearly 100 hispanic workers.

The protest, organized by a coalition of human rights groups and a local union, was to demand a dialog with company owners regarding the dismissals, which began in early December.

The Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee says on its website that the firings are part of an immigration-related audit. Group member Nigel Arevalo says all the fired workers are Latino.

So the company faces an audit, ICE demands to see documentation on the legality of the workers. They can't provide it, so they are let go. What is the company supposed to do, thumb it's nose at ICE? Pay fines, possibly face criminal charges?

If you're an illegal worker you cannot blame the company for letting you go rather than becoming a criminal like you. Leave.

Probably true. But what's also true, and much relevant to the situation is they are here illegally. And the employer is going to take the hit for hiring them. No employer who plans to stay in business would continue to employ illegals after an audit by the feds has outed them.

The overwhelming majority of American citizens want our borders secured. And that includes many Hispanics who are here legally. Somehow we've got make certain the discussion is spun by the other side to be that we are anti-immigration. Not so, we are anti-illegal immigrants and there's a huge difference.

It seems to me that Chipoltle is in an impossible position: They are vilified by the liberal public and illegal immigrant community for firing workers that can’t provide adequate documentation to support their right to work in the US, and the US Government (ICE) is just looking for any reason to give the company a fine. The penalties to company executives who knowingly hire illegal workers is stiff and can result in jail time. If I were an executive of Chipoltle, the illegal hispanic demonstration would be falling on my deaf ears!

Employers are between a rock and a hard place. They must be able to document the legal residency or citizenship status of their employees, yet they are not allowed to discriminate against anyone whose nationality may indicate an illegal status.
