Georgia Tech Armed Robbery in Disarmed Victim Zone
Atlanta Gun Rights examiner ^ | 21 December, 2010 | Ed Stone

Last night a Georgia Tech student was robbed in his dormitory room by four men wearing masks. At least one of the robbers was armed with a handgun. The university sent a message to campus students advising them on safety, with such helpful tidbits as:

Additional Safety Information for Georgia Tech -Walk in well lit areas. To report inoperative exterior campus lighting, visit: www.facilities.gatech.edu/om/lighting-form.php

. -Walk with a friend or in a group. -Be alert of your surroundings. -Immediately report suspicious activity to the Georgia Tech Police by calling 404-894-2500. Program the Georgia Tech Police Department's phone number into your cell phone. -For on campus transportation from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 A.M., please call Stingerette at 404-385-RIDE.

The university's helpful advice does not instruct students to carry a firearm, because in Georgia it is a crime to carry a firearm into a dorm room, meaning that students are denied the inherent right of self defense even while in their own home at the campus. Ironically, Georgia Tech was one of the most vocal advocates for keeping the current criminal law banning firearms from college campuses during the 2009-2010 legislative session. Georgia Tech even argued, unsuccessfully, to keep firearms out of college parking lots. Georgia Tech was more successful when arguing for keeping a criminal law against armed students in class and in their own sleeping quarters, but such laws never apply to violent criminals, who see such laws as more of an opportunity than an obstacle.

The result of disarming students is that students become helpless, disarmed victims, unlike students in Utah, Colorado, Oregon, and other states, where violent criminals have to think twice about whether their potential victims are armed.

College students are more than capable of stopping an armed robbery when the law does not get in their way, as 23 year old college student Ryan Moore demonstrated last week, when he shot an armed robber in an Ingles parking lot in Conyers, Georgia. Why is Ryan Moore disarmed the moment he crosses the imaginary line marking campus property? Armed robbers are not disarmed there, as last night's events once again demonstrate.

Students are disarmed because the Universities have been taken over by politically correct leftists who despise the Constitution.

I hope the student informed the gunman that it was illegal to posses firearms on campus, and that it would cost him at least 4 demerits!..............

Colleges are controlled by left wingers, socialists and other spineless droids. The idea that a student might shot and armed robber on campus scares them more then the armed robber shooting the student.

Newsflash, crime around the GT campus is nothing new, but breaking into a dorm room? I’ve got a pretty good idea which one it is—Smith was overlooking North Avenue and the Varsity parking lot across the interstate. The campus is within walking distance of the MARTA Five Points station...pretty much a craphole back in the 80’s when I went there. We were always warned not to take the tunnel on East Campus alone (men or women).

Hey, here's an idea... Buy a handgun or a taser or mace and learn to use it. Don't be a victim, don't surround yourself with other victims. A defenseless herd will draw in the predators. Hey GT and other victim-herd creating idiots: bugger off!

Geee- I would think that the inside of this guy’s DORM ROOM would be considered a ‘well-lit area’!!

How did these perps get into the dorm? No key cards required???

Thanks to the gun free zone we know that the guy with the gun was either a police officer or a security guard.

The advice they gave is not actually bad.

When in college I was on a campus night escort team. It was a nice opportunity to meet girls. Learned the art of small talk. Some of the girls did not even trust the escort guys. One girl had her hand in her purse the whole time we were walking. I asked her why and she pulled out a can of red spray paint. She said a shot in the face would not only disable an attacker but would mark him for identification as well.

I asked her if she ever had to use it. She said once when she was hitch-hiking. Not only did she spray the perp but she sprayed it all over the inside of his car as she was getting out.

End of story? I married her. Now she carries a gun.
31 years and still happy.

Stories like yours bring a smile to one’s face and give a boost to one’s (rapidly dwindling) faith in the remnant of courageous, common-sense America. Well done, and a hearty Merry Christmas to you and your good lady!

As a student, I would rather suffer the penalty for handgun possession and be guilty of self defense from killing an armed attacker on campus, than be dead and robbed. Civil disobedience against restrictive gun-free zones seems the only option on campus.

-Walk with a friend or in a group.

Yeah...that way the robber can get you all at one time instead of having to rob everyone individually. Wanna know how to avoid being robbed in Atlanta? Look and act like a native redneck from outside the perimeter. The thugs don't mess with us..they know we carry and we can shoot straight...and they know we won't hesitate.

Georgia Tech students (I’m a former one) should simply disregard such an asinine policy, and defend themselves as they see fit...
