President Barack Obama, addressing a tribal nations conference at the White House last week, announded that the U.S. government is now supporting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, which includes a sweeping declaration that "indigenous peoples" have a right to lands and resources they traditionally occupied or "otherwise used."
"Indigenous peoples have the right to the lands, territories and resources which they have traditionally owned, occupied or otherwise used or acquired," says the U.N. resolution.
The Bush administration had declined to support the resolution.
At the White House Tribal Nations Conference, Obama reminded the group that last year he signed a resolution passed by Congress that finally recognizes the sad and painful chapters in our shared history--a history too often marred by broken promises and grave injustices against the First Americans, he said.
The president added that no statement can undo the damage that was done, but he said the resolution can help reaffirm the principles that should guide our future.

The Osage want the whole county I live in back......
If by some strange twist of fate, this were to pass, the first claims tribes should file on is every military installation in the country. And the White House.
Followed closely by claims on all the favorite locations of the Hollywood stars, like Malibu, the Hollywood hills, Palm Springs, etc. Then the locations of all the university campuses in the nation.
Just to let all the liberals know that Obama has BOHICAed them all.
Hmmmm. How many strings of beads and blankets does that come out to?
Well, the “indigenous” peoples had to have taken the land from some prehistoric “indigenous” peoples that they fought and evicted. Anyone who thinks they’re descended from those earlier IP’s could claim it all.
I have a few drops of Cherokee in me; but that doesn’t entitle me to take land. (Just about everybody has some “indigenous” blood in their veins due to intermarriage in the early history of this country.)
So the Jews have the right to the lands, territories, and resources of the lands they have traditionally owned (i.e. Judea, Samaria, Canaan, Palestine, etc.)
The Islamists colonizing England and France and Spain and the Netherlands are going to have to surrender the territories?!!
So he's claiming yet another non-US nationality?
Boy, Obama and the lame ducks have done more to destroy this nation in the last two weeks than they have done in 2 years.
Glad the Pubs were there to try to put the brakes on things.
The Native Americans inhabited North America long before the whites came over and in time, murdered and slaughtered them.
Does this mean we relinquish our country?
That’s how I read it.
Anything to damage America a little more.
So I guess we’ll give the Carolinas back to the Cherokee and the Dakotas back to the Sioux?
Good luck ever seeing Obama's long form birth certificate if THAT happens.
I’m indigenous to earth, I want my rights.
I’m a quarter Cherokee so wheres my land and my check?
And to whom will Manhattan be given back to?
And what about all the descendants of the Sa’ami in North America, do they get to declare themselves landholders in northern Scandinavia?
My Crow name is One Who Helps People Throughout the Land, Obama said...
...and my wife’s Crow name is ‘Walks with Big Dumper’
Big deal. China will veto it in a Peking second.
It seems to me that indigenous means that you claim your culture originated on the land... my ancestors came from Ireland in the 1930. I don’t behave or speak like those in Ireland do — I’m indigenous to Indiana.
Besides, the original Clovis culture died when North America was hit by a comet 12,900 years ago... Everyone here is an immigrant.
check that... my ancestors came in 1830, not 1930...
