This is an interesting turn of events for a president once heralded as the most media savvy commander-in-chief in history.
Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said today at the press hearing that the White House welcomes Stewart's help in convincing Republicans to pass the First Responders bill.
"If there's the ability for that to sort of break through in our political environment, there's a good chance that he can help do that, Gibbs said in his briefing. I think he has put the awareness around this legislation. He's put that awareness into what you guys cover each day, and I think that's good. I hope he can convince two Republicans to support taking care of those that took care of so many on that awful day in our history."

How much more money do these heros want now...?
This is all a crock. I distrust the Dems pulling this now.
WTH next, the flipping funny papers???
Right!!!??
Gibbs. ‘We need a comedian to help pass the bill.’
How can anyone take Stewert seriously as “cutting edge” when the government trusts him to be their press secretary. Tokyo Rose, Baghdad Bob and J-Street Jon.
Why not, the illegals have Colbert and there’s Bon Jovi because Obama finds him so sexy or something.
Let’s get this straight!
The “FIRST RESPONDERS” are already covered!!!
This money is alledgedly for the follow-up, clean-up crews.
BUT!!!!
It’s been turned into a larded up Pork bill!!!
$7 BILLION!!!
This is standard, bleeding heart, bumper-sticker marketing, used to buy votes and pay back supporters.
Just a continuation of the socialist undermining of our great country.
We need to warm up their cool.
Their audience is small, but their influence is surprisingly large among the stoners and slackers and mouth-breathing basement dwellers.
Every one of the first responders has a gold plated Union medical/pension plan. No a single one of them has been denied care.
The City of New York has failed to plan for the medical liability of their pension plan (California you are next!)
The more apt title for this bill is the “New York City Medical and Pension Fund Bail Out Bill”
(a) I don’t see how any public employee, especially in NYC, wouldn’t already have gold-plated benefits.
(b) I don’t see how cleaning up a demolished building site would make one chronically ill.
(c) I wonder if this largesse isn’t part of a deal to keep Bloomberg out of the 2012 race.
They’d probably do better asking for MARTHA Stewarts help.
Jon Stewart is a “kept woman” of the Washington establishment.
OK, what am I missing here? Democrats have a majority in both the Senate & House. They can vote in anything without a single republican vote.
Bottom line BHO doesn’t have his own party in line/lockstep.
Old buildings + asbestos. + who knows what else. Maybe. And respirators etc. aren't always adequate.
BUT...I have a desk job, and I pay $4800 per year so Mrs Felis and I can fall off the stairs and get fixed. If I had the kind of job that might expose me to ick, you can be damn sure I'd have health (& life...) insurance. I worked in a steel mill to pay for college. I've seen what dangerous jobs can do.
This is about billions of dollars for trial lawyers for the next 20 years. On top of the 7 billion federal dollars already paid out to victims who’d filed by 2003.
Madame J Butterfly.
It WAS buring for months. I watched it everyday (on TV). I thought they were taken care of already. This is just more money for unions. They’re doing it now to make Repubs look heartless during the Christmas season.
Since this event occurred nearly 10 years ago, and they will be able to file up to 20 years from now, what is there to establish that any illness from ick in a destroyed building is from the WTC clean up and not a subsequent infection from a later cleanup site?
Is there a requirement that anyone who foresees EVER filing such a case retire from such work NOW?
