Cop shoots, kills family dog (Golden Retriever)

A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.

But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.

“He’s a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but he’s never bitten anyone.”

A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

And the cop should have known that exactly how ?

By the large electronic device around the dogs neck. That's how.

I am SICK of people making excuses for lousy cowardly cops!

So you ARE on the wrong side as I see it.

And since the dog was in his own yard confined by the invisible fence ,the dig WAS under control.

We don't need 100,00 more cops ,we need 50,000 FEWER cowardly bullies with badges.

Have I made myself clear?

Cops not stupid, it’s just that “you people” have given LE to much power. If any here has ever voted for a Police bond issue or sales tax, then don’t complain.

Years ago while accompanying a carrier and a supervisor on a route evaluation (to learn what that was all about) I noticed that BOTH OF THEM knew every nasty dog ~ plus, they warned me about a dog that tried to jump in the carrier's vehicle once.

They had the original dog stories ~ the dog that bit the tire while the vehicle was in motion and got stuck spinning round and round as the vehicle went on down the road, or the dogs that lie in wait UNDER the carrier vehicle then leap out just as he gets back from delivering the mail (on a park and loop).

There are no end to the stories about bad dogs, and good dogs gone bad, when you get a bunch of carriers together.

Then people wonder why their dogs front teeth got busted out ~ until they get the bill from the post office.

Bwahahahahahaha!

Condescend much?

I'm contemptuous of people who use bad logic to excuse even worse actions. Even if you are just playing Devil's advocate.

You stated people shouldn’t take action to defend themselves against aggressive dogs while they’re on their owner’s property. You’re wrong.

No. I'm not. Had this cop waited for the dog to cross the property line, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

You appear to be a rapist. I'm going to shoot you without any further evidence other than your being male.

Or look at it this way... "Your right to swing your fist ends at the tip of my nose." Now imagine I'm swinging my fist from across the room and you shoot me anyway. Even though upon further investigation you were never under any real threat because of the plexiglass partition between us.

Sorry, you will not win this argument.

I took it a step further.

The back yard where the dogs run is totally separate from the front yard where delivery people come in.
[mostly because too many of the delivery people fail to comprehend what a “close the gate” means, despite the sign *on* the gate telling them to do _just that_ and my dogs’ safety is paramount]

If, in some bizarre alternate universe, a trigger happy cop would come here, he’d have to break through a locked back gate and enter a secured back yard to shoot my dogs.

Things could get ugly really fast, if that ever happens.

NOTE: The claim is about Canada. There the dogs get locked up indoors for 9 months of the year ~ they’re probably paranoic and antsy the other 3 months.

My question was: How do mailmen possibly survive without a gun and shooting dogs on a daily basis?

I'm just tellin' ya that the regular carrier has made my dogs the best friends of the USPS until the substitutes come along and are apparently NOT part of the program.

Who's problem is that (given a door delivery neighborhood)?

3). The officer is a WUSS,and too quick to use his gun.

4).The department is itself a bunch of cowards because the authorities refused to release the officer's name.

If a "civilian" shoots an attacking or charging police canine do you think the citizen's name will be withheld?

You do realize shooting a police canine is treated the same as shooting a human officer in some juridistions?Which is a travesty in itself,as well as a double standard.

I support good, decent peace officers;but I absolutely DESPISE the jack-booted,scum that have become part of Law Enforcement!

I’ve heard (can anyone verify?) that dogs who bite most frequently don’t bark. That was the case when my then 13-year-old daughter stopped to pet a large dog staked out in the yard. After a trip to the emergency room, it was not a serious bite. The dog and his owner were banned from post housing.

As someone who has delivered mail, it’s was the quite one who bit me. Didn’t even know he was there and he took a nip. Sure as heck wasn’t a Golden.

Fire the cop. I’m sick of these trigger happy jerks. Don’t have the nerve to deal with a Golden, find another job.

Newfies are beautiful dogs. Excellent family pets from what I’ve heard as they are very loyal to their “pack”.

That’s reasonable. If a dog actually latched onto me or attempted to do so, we’d have a problem.

I live out in the country, and a couple of years ago, I was doing some trimming along the fence line when a dachshund ran by me, obviously just about worn out in the heat. A few minutes later, a pretty blonde lady in a minivan came by and indicated she was trying to catch the dog. I put down my trimmer and went into the brush. A few minutes later I came out carrying an uninjured dachshund. It had rolled onto its back and bit my left hand, so I stuck my bare right hand in its mouth to keep it occupied, and got it by the nape of the neck with my left. After we loaded the dog into the van, and the lady went on her way, I went back to my trimming. I hope the poor pup didn’t get sick from biting me.

Obviously I couldn’t have done that with a big dog like a GR, but a big dog wouldn’t have gone on its back that way.

What in the world are you talking about? The dog charged the cop — which is clearly not the same as a non-attacking male being shot because he was assumed to be a rapist, or a guy swinging his fist across the room behind plexiglass.

For a guy that claims to be contemptuous of illogical people, you seem to give yourself awfully wide latitude.

A man need not wait for an attacker (canine or otherwise) to cross an invisible property line before defending himself.

“They can shoot a family member down on their own property and then yammer on about ‘fearing for their lives’. Well it’s about time some of these idiots started really fearing for their lives.”

You are no advocate for good, bad or indifferent LEOs. You are truly just angry and potentially dangerous. Again you make the point that perhaps by harrassing or otherwise threatening to harm LEOs families, then “they” will learn a lesson.

What the hell kind of world do you live in? By paying a “heavy, Heavy Price” you mean putting innocent family members at risk, then you are too far gone.
