WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate has passed a sweeping bill to make food safer, sending it to the House in the waning days of Congress.
This is the second time the Senate has passed the bill, which would give the government broad new powers to increase inspections of food processing facilities and force companies to recall tainted food. The chamber passed the bill for the first time three weeks ago, but it was caught in a constitutional snag when senators mistakenly included tax provisions that are by law supposed to originate in the House.

The version of the legislation passed by the Senate on Sunday is amended to avoid another such mishap.

The $1.4 billion bill would place stricter standards on imported foods and require larger producers to follow tougher rules for keeping food safe.

But your doing such a good job at propaganda...couldn’t wait til the GOP elects are even seated to start the evil Obamamedia hate filled accusations, huh?

Right. I am presuming that they actually passed the continuing resolution in the Senate (although the article didn’t actually say so, just that they ahd amended it with the food safety bill).

However, I fully expect the house will pass the amended bill monday, and send it to Obama. They need something signed Tuesday, because that’s when the friday CR runs out.

But only slightly.

Food Safety Bill Lives
8:39 pm December 19, 2010

###

Excerpt:

In a parliamentary move laid out on the Senate floor by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid just after 7pm, the Senate took the food safety language that was passed as part of a stop-gap budget plan by the House,

*****attached it to another House-passed bill and approved that by unanimous consent.

A Democratic Senate aide told me that Republicans did not object to the plan, even though the bill has garnered fierce opposition in some GOP quarters.

****The move was a surprise, (((HOW ???))) as it seemed like the Food Safety bill was going to die in the waning days of this year, despite strong support in both the House and Senate.

*snip*

The House refused to act directly on that legislation,
because of what’s known as a “blue slip” problem. That
problem was solved when the House approved its long-term
Continuing Resolution last week, which included the
language of the Senate-passed food safety bill.

Blue slip
From Wikipedia

A blue slip or blue-slipping refers to two different legislative procedures in the United States Congress.

In the House, it refers to the rejection slip given to Senate tax and spending bills which have not originated in the House in the first place, per the House’s interpretation of the Origination clause.[citation needed]

In the Senate, it refers to slips on which Senators from the state of residence of a federal judicial nominee give an opinion on the nominee.

What's the point of the GOP??

For years now they are known as "The Party of BiPartisanship". Leader of that gang is Juan McAmnesty (my state) and Uber RINO Linsay Gramnesty.

April 7, 2008
Appearing on Fox News Sunday, the Arizona Republican didn’t take the opportunity to diss Obama when asked whether he thought his colleague from Illinois would be ready to handle the job if voters elected him.

McCain took the mic from a woman who called Obama an "Arab."
my note: Obama is only 6% black, 50% white, and you guessed it the rest is Arab.

I think we need to think about what is going on. The Dem’s
are passing bills that they want to cuz if the ‘pubs
go against them, the Dem’s will use that fact to tell the
voters in 2012 that the ‘pubs opposed these “so and so” bills.
Hopefully they thinnk , they will show the ‘pubs to be
just about a bunch of angry stupid unkind folk...
The pubs, should pass these bills, then when they’re in
power, wear the bills down of the most egregious errors in
them, and say , “yea, we passed the bills, but they have
to be corrected from the idiotic democratic version”..

Unfortunately, generally speaking, the American voting public is very ignorant
of many many issues especially when it comes down to
“housekeeping” kinda laws......

....”by giving the FDA the resources it needs to keep up with advances in food production and marketing, without unduly burdening farmers and food producers,” ....

in other words...farmers will get to keep the slave labor who use the fields as a toilet bowl and producers/processors can continue to pretend they aren’t aware that the majority of their employees are illegal aliens.

Does any one know if this will put an END to Amish life style...their income comes from the fruits of the grounds that they harvest and sell!!!

Hubby and I will continue to garden and give away...I preserved and process some but we share and give alot to neighbors, friends, church members, other seniors who no longer can garden. I refuse to allow Washington to control our very life style.

and the Obama’s fly off to Hawaii!!!! how lovely

Heck.

The GOP’s being so wimpy, that dems aren’t even accusing them of being obstructionist!

Not a peep. If that in and of itself doesn’t tell you they’re being lapdogs.

What are they there for? I mean. Really. At least TRY.

Wikipedia's summary of The Food Safety Modernization Act's scope, as passed by the House:

The HHS will require registration and payment of a fee by any "person (excluding farms and restaurants) who manufactures, processes, packs, distributes, receives, holds, or imports an article of food." Individuals who partake in food handling without official registration are subject to a maximum 10 year prison sentence. Registration requires each facility which produces or handles food to maintain records relating to food safety.

The bill contains an exception for food grown and consumed at private residences. As of the current writing, the bill does not contain an exception for small farmers if in the course of their operations they pack or distribute their produce. According to the text of the law all food sold at local farmers' markets, for example, would be subject to the certification requirements.

Bye, bye farmers' markets.

A friend sells fresh basil and kung pao peppers grown in her home garden to a few local restuarants. She might earn enough to cover her yearly garden expenses. So, the FEDs want to send her to prison for up to ten years?

I doubt even Kafka could imagine such an absurdity.

My family is not able to grow our on food.
We are dependant on local growers and support them to feed our family.

I changed my eating habits years ago to stay far away from processed foods as described in Laz’s post.

Same with Pharmacudicals.

That being said this is very upsetting.

While the Obama’s are promoting organic home grown they seem to be supporting yanking the fresh food rug from under us.

Farmed toxic Fish? Anyone?
And the little research I have done on what companies like Monsanto has done genetically to seeds.

Scary.

Someone told me the other day that they freaked out that there was a bug in their spinich. Give me a frickin break.

If the bugs won’t eat it I don’t want it, there should be gnats in the greens for heavens sake.

Lastly there was an article here at FR about aborted human parts being sold to biotech that are being studied to put into things we use on or in our body via vaccines and a possiblity of food engineering.

Soylent green is not such a funny joke anymore.
