The Senate has just voted to end debate on a bill that would lift the ban on gays serving openly in the military, essentially clearing the measure for passage and signature by the president.
Lawmakers voted 63 to 33 to end debate on the current policy, put in place by former president Bill Clinton, informally known as "don't ask don't tell."
The Senate could vote on final passage of the measure as early as today but it will most likely happen on Sunday or Monday.
"We are on the verge of ending 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' for good," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said after the vote "This is one of those moments in our history when we stepped up and squared our policies with the values this nation was founded upon."

You're probably right, but they will not leave quietly. There will be plenty of lawsuits and ultimately they will weaken the military ...if not from within, from without, which I feel has always been the goal of the left.
Quite a rambling mess. So you will donate all your money - everything you've got - to any traitor? wow. :-)
The absolute end of ever again holding any respect for the institution of the American armed forces. Game over.
I would gladly support any portion of the military brave enough to revolt.
behind the outrage you hear the closing of wallets and the Nations GOP going into bankruptcy from lack of money.
Time to line up the primary knockouts. We defeated castle in a primary, the sitting senators need to be out.
Murky had national GOP support. RINOs who betrayed the military should lose their senatorial committee seats. put them in charge of buggy whips.
Please do us a favor and decide not to come back to FR at all. You are part of the problem.
Given the choice, I'm glad "DREAM" was the one that failed!
I am opposed to profanity on this board - so there is nothing I have to say at the present moment.
I concur......and I cannot say what I want to say as well.
“This is one of those moments in our history when we stepped up and squared our policies with the values this nation was founded upon.”
I did not know this nation was founded upon principles of homosexual sodomy; but perhaps, with Harry Reid, that is only “principle” that swells his pride.
I can only pray that Harry Reid’s influence on America is soon curtailed by some act of Divine justice. Woe to the people when their leaders are wicked.
I agree, I need the Republican list. This is the fast track to a 3rd rate power.
We are almost to a point in history that will be marked by homo military and pre-homo military. I guess it’s nice that I can proudly say, “I was in the military back before it was homo.”
The GOP traded their tax cuts for this repeal. Of course they can’t declare that openly. Also, there were a number of democrats who voted against the DREAM act, making it a non-starter.
2012. Especially if there are actual negative effects measurable by then, we can un-do this.
If we can’t see the negative effects, it won’t be repealed. The only thing keeping the policy in place now is the negative impact expected.
Webb prefers a report to common sense.
VOTE IS AT 3:00 PM TODAY!!!
Call senators!!!!
(rinos who vote for cloture closure but vote against repeal think we are that stupid.)
CALL ALL SENATORS!!
My straight son’s best friend is gay, my husband’s brother is gay. I don’t support any acquisition of rights based on group affiliation and I am completely against gay marriage. The issue for me is that the current policy does not exclude gays from military service and why should someone who is gay be kicked out of the military just for being gay if they have served with honor? It doesn’t make any sense to me. And it makes less sense to me that we should hate someone just because we don’t like eho they are.
>>”This is one of those moments in our history when we stepped up and squared our policies with the values this nation was founded upon.”<<
Yeah right Harry. They looked forward the degradation and forming a country that has the same situation as Sodom and Gomorrah. /s
Well, I'm going to continue to support our military as an institution. It's just too important to abandon.
Everything we cherish depends on our military.
In a few minutes, Senators will be arguing in opposition to repealing DADT. I am hoping that today, just seven days before Christmas, at least one Senator will find the time to at least mention our God and the Bible as a basis for opposing this repeal.
“Another thing to remember, is that whether we like it or not, most young people (todays soldiers) don’t view homosexuality the same way as the older people do. My husband is a Veteran, and 25 years ago when he was a soldier there is no way a gay serviceman would be tolerated. This just isn’t the case today (as the recent survey proved).”
Surveys can be crocked to say whatever the surveyor wishes it to. In this case, the upper brass gave out a survey whose results were meant to be interpreted only one way. Otherwise Gates would not have been so intent on carrying out the will of his master 0bama.
“I just don’t think that just because someone is gay, they can’t be the best damn soldier in the world. They can be proud Americans, and they can (and do) fight for my freedoms, just as the straight soldiers do now.”
Let us just say that it makes it far less likely, being as they are mentally ill narcissists. As far as their being proud Americans- bah humbug. The very fact of being gay pretty much separates them from the concept of natural law, which assumes that there is a Creator, and that His universe is governed by natural laws- one of which is that He created us male and female.
“As I said, homosexuality is a sin, but let’s let God sort it out!”
God also tells us not to condone these things. We are commanded to call this evil what it is and speak the truth.
Do not include me in your "let's let God sort it out!" cr*p.
Comparing divorce and adultery with homosexual sex is called moral relative reasoning -adultery is and will still be illegal in the military after this homosexual sex is okay law if it passes -where is your morally spineless outrage since according to your reasoning it is not fair that some sins are treated differently.
Our law should reflect the highest standards NOT the least common denominator. Our laws to be legitimate should reflect and uphold our morality and the natural law -the law of God. A nation under God founded upon the principles of natural law and unalienable rights endowed by the Creator DOES NOT spit in the face of God by calling homosexual sex good and normal. An individual and for that matter a nation does not believe in God and defy Him.
Make no mistake --this is all about legalizing homosexual sex in the military and as well it is about placing those who have no moral compass nor respect for God in charge of defending that which they consider irrelevant...
Sodom and Gomorrah ring a bell?
You can support evil by yourself.
