Coldest December since records began as temperatures plummet to minus 10C bringing travel chaos across Britain
Swathes of Britain skidded to a halt today as the big freeze returned - grounding flights, closing rail links and leaving traffic at a standstill.
And tonight the nation was braced for another 10in of snow and yet more sub-zero temperatures - with no let-up in the bitterly cold weather for at least a month, forecasters have warned.
The Arctic conditions are set to last through the Christmas and New Year bank holidays and beyond and as temperatures plummeted to -10c (14f) the Met Office said this December was almost certain to become the coldest since records began in 1910.
The latest snowfall carpeted large swathes of Britain today - with up to 5in falling in places - paralysing roads and rail, and forcing airports and schools to close.
Forecasters warned the worst was still to come over the next 24 hours as the heaviest December snowfall for 30 years tightened its grip on the nation once more. The South is expected to be worst hit with up to 10in falling during the course of tomorrow. By the start of next week temperatures are set to fall to as low as -15c (5f). Met Office forecaster Barry Gromett said the average mean temperature for the first two weeks of this month was -0.7c. The coldest ever average for this time of year - recorded in December 1981 - was 0.2c.

Worth checking the link out to see the excellent pictures.
LOL! That’s why they have been wanting to call it climate change instead lately!
I remember deplaning in Logan (from Toronto, iirc) and pilot announced that it was 14 degrees. I heard a voice with a British accent saying, “It doesn’t feel like 14 degrees.” (14 C = 57.2 F). -10 C = +14F. Brrrr. While not uncommon in Boston, 14F is pretty rare in Britain.
I wish we’d get up to 14 degrees. I’d break out the bikini.
It’s Bush’s Fault!
How much power do snow-covered solar panels and frozen windmills produce?
We do need photo evidence! ;)
But...but...I thought it was the warmest year on record!!

Snicker....although I shouldn't be snickering since here in California, they just passed some cap and trade thing. Yikes! BTW, here in Los Angeles we also happen to be having an unusually cold winter, plus it's turning out to be one of our wettest winters in awhile.
Took the time to look at the photos on your Freepsite.
Awesome, inspiring & tear jerking to this 62 year old curmudgeon!
God Bless your daughter, you and yours this Christmas Season.
Cool.......Maunder would be proud
Well, they could all burn some wood in their fireplaces, warming the house, and contributing to the CARBON in the air.
Or is that even legal over there?
Not sure, but, I’m sure the ration equates to the reliability of the batteries in electric cars and the lumens w/ CFL’s at 14F.
I hear you, we first we hit 14 degrees back in October.
Solution - eliminate 90% of world government - but, even with that amount of reduction, humans would be faced with government still MUCH too large. LOL
The funny things is that these junk science people act as if the earth has some normal temperature it should maintain, and that fluctuations are always abnormal and bad. Silly liberals.
I wonder if that volcano Eyjafjallajkull added to all this?
They say the ash stays up there 6mos or so and the sulfur dioxide gas stays in the atmosphere for up to three years.
Um, no you don’t! LOL!
Last winter was exceedingly miserable. In fact, I was overjoyed when that March warm spell hit the US. And then Easter brought about summer-like conditions.
