NEW YORK, December 16, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The American Civil Liberties Union has attacked Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix after news broke this week that the bishop had taken further steps against a Catholic hospital that had performed a direct abortion.
Reacting to the latest clash, Alexa Kolbi-Molinas, staff attorney with the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, said the staff of the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center “did the right thing” by killing an unborn child late last year to avert aggravation of the mother’s pulmonary hypertension.
“A hospital’s first responsibility must be to protect the health of its patient,” said Kolbi-Molinas in a statement Wednesday. “Religiously affiliated hospitals are not exempt from federal laws that protect a patient’s right to receive emergency care, and cannot invoke their religious status to jeopardize the health and lives of pregnant women.”
The pro-abortion wing of the advocacy group had already written to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in July of this year urging them to investigate Catholic hospitals that refuse to perform direct abortions as a matter of Catholic moral principle.
The Arizona Republic had revealed earlier this week that Bishop Olmsted had offered an ultimatum to the hospital’s parent company in order to keep their official Catholic status. The bishop said the hospital would have to backtrack on its endorsement of the abortion, submit to a diocesan review, and agree to ongoing staff training on the U.S. bishops Ethical and Religious Directives.
Should the hospital not comply, it would still be able to call itself “Catholic,” but the diocese would officially renounce the facility and priests would no longer be permitted to conduct Mass there.
ACLU = evil beyond words.
Hey, the ACLU has no grounds.
If the Hospital wants Catholic affiliation, they have to play by the Catholic rules.
If they want to make up their own rules, they are still FREE TO DO SO, but without Catholic affiliation.
What, is the ACLU gonna FORCE the Catholic Church to approve abortions? Whatever happened to their precious WALL OF SEPARATION between Church and State?
That was the whole point of the Freedom of Choice Act. To force Catholic Hospitals to perform Abortions, or close them down.
> That was the whole point of the Freedom of Choice Act. To > force Catholic Hospitals to perform Abortions, or close
> them down.
How clever.
I should’ve known that in our doubleplusgood newspeak world, Freedom of Choice means No Choice.
Closing hospitals and causing physicians to seek careers as auto mechanics and stock brokers is just what we need when we wanna add 30 million people, and who knows how many crimmigrants, to the gummint 0bamao care.
Isn’t this hospital a privately owned facility? If so, the ACLU has 0 grounds for any lawsuit.
Simple solution. Refuse to take any and all funds from the government, and if they persist, close the hospitals.
For what shall it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For he that shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation: the Son of man also will be ashamed of him, when he shall come in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
Gospel of St. Mark 8:36-38
Ah yes, the “Always Careless with Liberties Union”.
Everybody knows that doing it in the hospital makes it alright!/sarc

It is now Officially Time to act on our consciences, just like this good Bishop. Act. If we don't, we have only ourselves to blame for the even worse hell that is about to break upon the shore.
This so-called wall of separation is actually a wall penning people of conscience and morality into a Gulag.
Thanks LJ.
I read stuff like this and I really lose all hope ;(

Exactly!
Well said.
I feel very hopeless right now. Who am I? A tiny nobody. But I also feel a strengthening of will - do say and do the right thing, according to the immutable and eternal laws of God, come hell or high water. What’s death? Nothing. It means in an instant, the eternal soul leaves the mortal coil - the dying flesh and blood - behind. It’s nothing. We all have to leave the earthly body some day. And the results of how we lived, and who we served, determine our future destination.
It’s time for everyone who has a conscience (hearing the Lord in our hearts) to act on that conscience. If we don’t - we will be answering for our cowardice in the future.
And this - with God, all things are possible. Not as we necessarily plan, but His plan is always the best one.
When I consider the above, although I feel much sorrow in my heart, I feel the strength to carry on and try harder.
A Catholic bishop doesn’t think Catholic hospitals should be doing abortions. What a radical concept.

Up yours ACLU, you freakish counselors of killing nascent human life.

I fully expected some type of culture of death response like this. No matter....the pro-life position is strengthening in this nation and elsewhere. Science continues to reveal the truth of what is taking place.
God’s truth regarding LIFE will become indisputable. May God bless this bishop and all others who stand firm for what is right and good.
Indeed.
