Obama authorized a troop surge for which Lakin was in line to participate. It’s not a separate issue at all.

One rational response to being tried and convicted of an offense is to conclude and say:
“I made a mistake, which I now regret.”
It is routinely expressed, to humor the sentencing authorities, who want a confession and a show of remorse.
Plus on top of that, Lakin may have truly returned to his senses, and realized it was a bonehead idea in the first instance.
