In shift, Sarah Palin stresses electability as a reason to run for president

Over the past month, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has quietly altered her case for the presidency in a savvy shift of rhetoric.

The lofty goal? Turning the main reason a Republican might oppose her into the primary reason for voting for her. If she can pull it off, the nomination might be hers, but she is up against a tough set of barriers.

Every candidate must have a compelling reason for running, and until one month ago, Palin’s was simple.

In October, she told “Entertainment Tonight” that she would only run if the field were missing a candidate who had “common sense” and “pro-Constitution passion.”

It there were such a candidate, Palin would opt out of a race and be “their biggest supporter and biggest help-mate.”

That answer boxed Palin in considerably, because the field will likely include at least a few candidates who fit those criteria. For example, Palin gave a ringing endorsement to Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), a possible 2012 candidate, in his reelection bid earlier this year.

During an interview with Fox News, Palin repeated that she wanted to see if there were other conservative candidates who would run before making her decision, but slipped in this tiny proviso: Those candidates had to be “electable.”

“I’m certainly going to take a good lay-of-the-land look and see if there are others out there who are electable,” she said.

Yes, she gave Rick Perry a ringing endorsement in his run for Governor.

This author, as most if not all left-wing authors are, is being deceitful in the way he turned that sentence in order to make it look like she was endorsing him for a run for POTUS.

And there are other names closely associated with the Tea Party movement, of which Palin is a prominent member, who might run: Rep. Mike Pence (R) of Indiana, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (R) and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.).

Not to be picky, but, let's look at these three guys:

1. Mike Pence: Love the guy, but no Congressman has been elected President since the 19th Century.
2. Rick Santorum: It is still hard for a lot of Conservatives to enthusiastically support him after he stabbed a good Conservative, Pat Toomey, in the back and endorsed the low-life, scum bag Arlen Specter in the GOP Primary in 2004. I still can't friggin' stand the guy.
3. Newt Gingrich: Had an affair on his wife who was dying with cancer, divorced her and married a younger chick. A lot of personal baggage.

So, let's talk "electability"......

Palin has consistently positioned herself as a reluctant candidate, someone who would only run if called to by unusual circumstances.

Not unlike Julius Caesar, when Marc Antony offered him the crown:

Ay, marry, was't, and he put it by thrice, every time gentler than other, and at every putting-by mine honest neighbours shouted.

Anybody who thinks Sarah Palin has any intention other than to run for president is fooling themselves.

the Public Policy Polling group concluded that Palin was “virtually unelectable” thanks to her anemic numbers with Democrats and independents.

The same thing was said of another GOP candidate some years ago. Can't remember his name...........I think it was........ Reagan or something like that.

I seemed to understand the “if no one else will do it” saying. The media and those neg. of Palin here on FR take her sometimes to literal. For example when she said she has certain politicians in her target media assumed she meant bullseye and kill them. LITERAL. ridiculous.

Again, nothing she says or does will change your mind.

And a poll in North Carolina shows Obama keeping the state blue if Palin were the nominee, thanks to the former Alaska governor’s 19 percent favorability rating in that state.

North Carolina??? Sarah only has a 19% Favorability rating? I find that hard to believe.

That's primarily because Congressmen don't generally have a national organization early on, but a lot of that can be mitigated by leveraging the Internet.

I will not support Sarah in any primaires, if she gets the nod I would vote for her.

But her position on McCain was a bad one.

The same thing was said of another GOP candidate some years ago. Can't remember his name...........I think it was........ Reagan or something like that.

And the dynamic may be similar. Obama's negatives will be a huge factor in turnout. In theory, I could see Obama eking out a win against any GOP candidate....if everyone was required to cast a vote. But they aren't, and only the passionate will.

This cuts both ways for Palin; she has a rabid support base, but induces similar passions in her staunchest opponents. She would engergize a portion of the Left otherwise inclined to stay home.

I'm not for or against her candidacy at this point. I'd like to see someone emerge as a slam dunk, like an anti-McCain. She may be it, but she may not.

Sarah is holding a lot of power. Because on her endorsement ONE candidate stands to gain a lot of votes. Woe to the idiot who wants to be president who attacks her personally or professionally. I won’t vote for him and she won’t endorse him (or her). Whether or not she chooses to run for president she’s already influencing the outcome and steering the conversation. Go Sarah.
