Heck in California they get breakfast, lunch, and at some schools dinner (oh yeah and the parents can get free dinner too).
The parents? Are you kidding?
In my school district in the kids not only get free breakfast and lunch they also get a snack TWICE a day (morning and afternoon).Classrooms have a basket that one student takes down to the lunchroom and fills with fresh fruit. All students may help themselves—even if they don’t qualify for free lunch. I’m not sure if every school does this, since the district has a few schools in wealthier neighborhoods. In some of these schools as much as 90% of the kids “qualify” for free lunch and the majority of them live with single parents. It’s very rare to meet a kid with two married parents and very common for them to have step-parents, mom’s boyfriend, dad’s girlfriend, grandparents, foster parents because parent is in jail, etc.
