More than two-thirds of New York City's public school students will begin getting more nutritious free or low-cost school lunches under First Lady Michelle Obama's pet project to get kids to eat well and exercise.
President Obama signed into law Sunday the $4.5 billion Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which expands the free lunch program and requires that schools provide more nutritious lunches.
"We've seen the connection between what kids eat and how well they perform in school," he said.
Some 680,000 out of 1.1 million New York children participate in the school lunch program - a big chunk of the 16 million kids nationwide served by the program.

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
America! The Land of the Free! lunch. Or as the illegals call it, “The Big Pinata”. Whack that puppy enough times and the goodies start falling out.
Does this mean that the bill has a buttload of bigear marks?
We were listening to a commentator on FOX regarding her calling this a National Security Issue.
Some of his views/perceptions about her “agenda” was down right unAmerican scary.
Beans and rice with a V8 would be pretty healthy.
If Obama sees a “connection between what kids eat and how well they perform in school,” then I hazard to guess he ate nothing but Twinkies, Hershey’s chocolate, potato chips, ice cream, and sugar-sweetened Coke until age 25. That would explain his failure to release ANY of his grades.
Famous quote from somebody!...LOL...OK I made it up..
Do your own DD!
They expanded the ‘free’ lunch program. Lots more dollars to pay for even more kids to eat ‘free’ at school.
Well, so long as it's made with creme fraiche!
Michelle wants salad bars and vegetables served in schools. It’s going to be heartbreaking to see all that “nutricious” food being thrown out because kids WON’T eat it!
Excellent choice of words.
I have an 11 yr old granddaughter. She will not eat that stuff. The kids now are never hungry so they are really picky. Of course it goes without saying, we ate whatever was put in front of us.
A person I know has four children with four baby daddies. She gets child support times four, probably gets food stamps and three of the children are of school age. I know that she only went to work a few times a month. The five of them are well dressed, healthy, eat Dairy Queen, drink bottled water, drive a big auto, have dogs, have new nails and braided hair. Now, more free food?
And, a cellular phone attached to the ear almost 24/7!
My dad sent me a book about my home town in the Shenandoah valley that had a tiny little part about a lady that was remembered for feeding kids a hot lunch for 10 cents. This took place in the 1940’s and the kids who ate at “gasp” her house were too far from home to walk back and get lunch.
She fed them what her own kids got and it was not grand. Gravy bread was often the main course. Veggies from the garden either fresh or canned were often on the menu as well. Moochelle would have mixed feelings about the menu. But dang it the kids did eat it or else.
Heck in California they get breakfast, lunch, and at some schools dinner (oh yeah and the parents can get free dinner too).
The parents? Are you kidding?
Mondays were hot dog on a roll, baked beans, dessert (usually canned fruit or jello) and milk. For all 12 years! Of course, the foods were not "fast food" - all was cooked on site. And they didn't cater to picky eaters. You were free to bring your lunch from home, but ate in the gym instead of the cafeteria if you did that.
For the most part kids were in pretty good shape physically - we had outdoor recess twice a day. And played outside every afternoon after school.
