County wants to ban public e-cigarette smoking (King Co; WA State)
The Seattle P.I. ^ | December 13, 2010 | VANESSA HO

Five years after Washington residents voted to ban smoking cigarettes, cigars and pipes in public places, King County wants to add one more thing to the list: Electronic cigarettes.

The 2006 state law banned smoking in bars and restaurants on the basis that second-hand smoke causes cancer and other diseases. King County's rationale for adding e-cigarettes, also known as battery-powered nicotine-delivery devices, to the list of forbidden acts is a little different.

The fake cigs, from which users inhale vaporized nicotine, don't emit smoke. Rather, they produce a less-smelly, combustion-free mist.

But public health officials say they're so similar to the real thing that they make tobacco enforcement difficult and often prompt smokers to think it's OK to light up in public. And that leads to second-hand smoke, health officials reason.

"The idea is that even though they're not exactly identical to cigarettes, people see folks using e-cigarettes, and they think somebody else is smoking," said Bud Nicola, a King County Board of Health member and affiliate professor with the University of Washington School of Public Health. "It makes it very difficult for inspectors."

I flew in and out of Chicago last month. The TSA prohibited smokeless cigarettes, but will let you take a can of snuff aboard.

Once you're on the plane the flight attendants stated that all tobacco use is prohibited and they went out of their way to emphasize smokeless tobacco.

"...when did they start this, cause I bought my e-cigs in Florida & brought them home on the plane in August of this year!"

I just did some business travel last month. The TSA at Midway Airport in Chicago were confiscating e-cigs.

I propose making the sale and possession of lighters illegal since they can be used to light tobacco products.

and smokeless tobacco is banned as well.

No it's not... I've had my copenhagen along on many flights. It's a lifesaver.

Hi RF. I’m thinking of getting a kit for my brother to try out. He’s been smoking Marlboros for over 30 years. Any suggestions on brands? Thanks.

Not meaning to butt in, but I purchased e-cigarettes for my wife, my stepdaughter, and my son-in-law so that they could smoke in the house. I am a non-smoker and don't have any problem with their e-cigs.

We bought this brand ... SmokeTip at http://www.smoketip.com/

They actually have a Marlboro-flavored "filter" called "Cowboy" in regular, light, extra-light, and nicotine free.

It may not be banned by the TSA, but as of my most recent commercial flight about a month ago, the flight attendants announced that smokeless tobacco use was not permitted on the flight. It may be a specific airline rule (United) but in this day and age, noncompliance with the instructions of the flight crew can get still make things at your arrival pretty uncomfortable.

Interesting... I flew United about a month ago too. I suppose there’s some idjits that have been leaving behind some nasty spit-cups. @holes... ruin a good thing for the rest of us.

Some of them, though, like the Camel snus packets you don’t need to spit, and would be hard for them to ever detect, and thusly, care about.

Yeah...I did a little research after I replied to you as I’d dipped on flights for years. It looks like it’s a specific rule of Delta (and a few other carriers) that bans tobacco usage all together in flight. I was kind of caught off guard when the pre-flight instructions from the flight crew specifically addressed smokeless tobacco.

I heard on the news today that “they” have discovered that the Blood of Children who live in apartment complexes contains 46% more nicotine than the Blood of Children that live in houses.

Well yeah, because dippin’ and spittin’ while sitting between two people would be... well it would be wrong. Among other things.

Well...so would be wearing too much cologne, not using deodorant, crying children, slurping coffee, wearing an Obama T-shirt, picking one's nose, etc.

I guess we just need to keep moving the line until everybody flies in a straightjacket with a gag in their mouth so people like you aren't offended.
