Richard Holbrooke has died
ABC News ^ | December 13, 2010 | Jack Tapper

ABC News has learned that Richard Holbrooke, the US Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, has died.

On Friday, Holbrooke was rushed to the hospital with a torn aorta. He went through more than 20 hours of surgery. Earlier this evening, speaking at the US State Department, President Obama sang Holbrooke's praises and called him "a tough son of a gun."

Holbrooke, 69, was a former ambassador to the United Nations and served as chief negotiator at the Dayton Peace Accords, which ended the war in Bosnia.

The New Yorker's George Packer wrote a nice story about Holbrooke last year, which you can read HERE.

RIP. My condolences to the family and friends.

President Obama sang Holbrooke's praises and called him "a tough son of a gun."

That's like Gore holding a Global Warming rally...

RIP Mr.Holbrooke. Any death of course is hard on friends and family, but I would think that an unexpected one would be even harder. To have it occur at this time of year is even worse.

I thought I recognized his wife’s name. Kati Marton was once married to the late Peter Jennings.

It's a rupture. Multiple causes, not necessarily near his heart.

How does one get a “torn Aorta” anyway?

Can occur due to physical trauma, but high blood pressure is the most common risk factor. It's more common in men than women, and roughly 10,000 Americans die from it annually.

I liked his Mark Twain show.

Good one!

His maker can decide his fate - condolences to his family. It's not the time to dance on his grave. I didn't agree with his politics, but this isn't the time.

All these threads about famous people dying! Why no threads about famous people being born?

They aren't famous yet

Very hard for his family at this time of year. May they find comfort in God’s peace.
