ABC News has learned that Richard Holbrooke, the US Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, has died.
On Friday, Holbrooke was rushed to the hospital with a torn aorta. He went through more than 20 hours of surgery. Earlier this evening, speaking at the US State Department, President Obama sang Holbrooke's praises and called him "a tough son of a gun."
Holbrooke, 69, was a former ambassador to the United Nations and served as chief negotiator at the Dayton Peace Accords, which ended the war in Bosnia.
The New Yorker's George Packer wrote a nice story about Holbrooke last year, which you can read HERE.

Wow. I participated in several meetings last year with Holbrooke when I was deployed to Afghanistan. He was abrasive and single-minded with many. With my team (we were helping the Afghans run their presidential election) he was much kinder. Like him or dislike him, he was as effective as probably any senior diplomat could be in the complex situation that is Afghanistan. This is a blow to our effort in Afghanistan, make no mistake.

All these threads about famous people dying! Why no threads about famous people being born?
To: Ravnagora
Well, his timing for an injury was good. It was before Obama care. 69 years old....20 hours of surgery....Under Obama care he would have been left to die. Oh wait a second, I guess that only applies to us ‘regular’ citizens.

Condolences to his family and friends. Can’t say I ever really liked him much but he was always brave enough to go on Fox News and take the heat and represent his point of view.
To: Poundstone
I understand he met with his team earlier today and the comment from all was that he’s as tough as nails. Prayers up to his family.

You are right. The minute I heard Obozo was praying for him, I knew he was a goner. Obozo prayers never even reached the ceiling, much less the ear of God.
