Wow. I participated in several meetings last year with Holbrooke when I was deployed to Afghanistan. He was abrasive and single-minded with many. With my team (we were helping the Afghans run their presidential election) he was much kinder. Like him or dislike him, he was as effective as probably any senior diplomat could be in the complex situation that is Afghanistan. This is a blow to our effort in Afghanistan, make no mistake.

I understand he met with his team earlier today and the comment from all was that he’s as tough as nails. Prayers up to his family.

I heard the same thing said on the news..He had a terrible temper but he will be a great loss because of his great understanding of Afghanistan and its complexities.
He has been a devoted servant of our nation..love em or not.
Rest in peace.

God Bless Mr. Holbrooke’s family - As for Astan/Pak the man was dead wrong on virtually everything procedure wise - He made the complex situations there far worse off than before he entered them - Astan/Pak situations are actually much better off without him involved - This is coming from someone, likewise, who has been to Astan several times over the past 7 years -

I agree. Love him or hate him, he was a brilliant negotiator.
My prayers are with his family. Rest in peace Mr. Holbrook.
