Kids are getting high on a common household spice - nutmeg

TAMPA, Fla. - There are new concerns for parents, as a common household spice is now being abused by teenagers to get high.  Video of kids smoking, eating and drinking large quantities of nutmeg to get high can be found all over YouTube.com.

According to various online reports, Nutmeg contains Myristicin, a compound that can cause euphoria and hallucinations. Potential side effects from getting high off Nutmeg include: vomiting, dizziness and convulsions.

When shown some of the YouTube videos, random people on the street were shocked to hear this was happening.  "What other kind of seasoning could you possibly try to smoke or sniff?  What else could they get their hands on?  It's kind of scary to hear about that," said Emily Felgenhauer.

A small amount of nutmeg in your recipes or on top of some egg nog is not harmful.  Users consume the spice in high quantities to feel negative effects.

But because most homes have the spice in a pantry or kitchen, it's easy to obtain, and has become an easy target for those kids attempting to get high.

When they outlaw nutmeg, only outlaws will have nutmeg.

Not exactly a spice used a lot. Who'd have thought?

Time to set up federal database of everyone buying nutmeg. You know...Just like with Sudafed. We have to monitor the people you know.

These kids are stupid. They should go into the supermarket and suck the N20 out of whipped cream cans. Just don't get caught!

Yeah, not like dropping a 4 way hit of windowpane.

I just had 10 hits of low-E, double-hung, argon-filled thermopane last week. Costed plenty, but I can already feel the difference.

Party on!

These are "side effects" I would avoid with a passion no matter what age I happened to be.

Is this an "in" for the government to regulate our spices now?

There is such a reflex response- if you get high on it, it’s evil.

Unless it's booze. Then it's not a "high high."

Nothing new

I remember when grocery stores stopped selling whole nutmegs during the 70’s.

Guess we can blame foodTV for bringing the whole nutmeg back

KK - who has a nutmeg grater and grinds her own.

There will now be a seven day waiting period to purchase nutmeg.

Sales are up. Invest in nutmeg.

Say this isn’t so. I like my nutmeg and save it like it was iconic, using it so sparingly that it gets oooolllldddd.

And here I dropped an old 1/4 piece of actual nutmeg into my yogurt today. It was rather nasty, to be frank, chomping into it. I like nutmeg, but this was a 2-year old fragment, and I didn’t want to waste it.

Some of my spices hiding in the back of the cupboard are probably done for. Every once in a while, I spy the powdered mustard and wonder just how old it is, but I like the can, so I keep it.

The only spice that is really, really cool is whole star anise. I’m not a fan of black licorice, but that is just a cool looking little nugget of taste.

If you are a halfway decent hypnotic subject then hypnotic suggestion can allow you to experience a drug induced state you have had before...so will they outlaw hypnosis.

Apple or Strawberry??

Doesn't really matter as both were equally as vile!!

But both were probably the most consumed beverage for a good part of the class of '77. after beer, of course.

On the plus side, nutmeg has a whole bunch of therapeutic effects.

The health benefits of nutmeg oil include its ability to treat stress, pain, menstrual cramps, heart disorders, indigestion, blood pressure, cough and bad breadth. The health benefits of nutmeg oil can be attributed to its medicinal properties such as sedative, stimulant, relaxing, anti inflammatory, antiseptic, bactericide, etc.

Probably the best common use is to treat dental pain, as nutmeg, like cloves, can be used as an anesthetic.

Nutmeg oil is one of those things that people with arthritis should try on swollen joints. A percentage of people get a good effect from it and other herb oils, especially oregano.
