Meeks' $325/month office a suite fantasy
New York Post ^ | December 12, 2010 | Isabel Vincent & Melissa Klein

Rep. Gregory Meeks' Build America Political Action Committee pays $325 in monthly rent for a phantom Queens office.

The organization says it is based in "Suite 535" at 153-01 Jamaica Ave., but there is no such office in that building, which houses Meeks' district office and his campaign committee.

And the building's manager said it had no record of the Build America PAC as a tenant.

The questionable spending is one of several inconsistencies in the PAC's records, a Post review found.

The organization's legal fees jumped this year after Meeks became the target of a federal investigation. Lawmakers are not allowed to use PAC money for their legal defense.

$325 wouldn’t rent a broom closet in NYC. Smart money says it’s a monthly fee for a virtual office setup. Lots of businesses do that in NYC. For as little as $100 a month to start, you get a NY address. Usually they handle mail and sometimes phone calls. Depends what you want to pay. It’s all on the up and up. Nothing wrong with it.

Of course, Meeks is a slimebag, so I say investigate away. Just don’t expect to find anything nefarious.

You’re probably right and I know nothing about those setups but how about from an ethical angle him being a Congressman. Would it make a difference if the monies were being put in a PAC and then Meeks using it for legal fees?

Innocent!!!!! No AG investigation. Meeks looks like his ancestors were slaves and therefore he can not be held the standards we would impose on members of the KKK.......except those like the late and sometimes lamented Sen Byrd.

"For as little as $100 a month to start, you get a NY address. Usually they handle mail and sometimes phone calls. Depends what you want to pay."

That is understandable. However, there still must be a correct address to send the mail to so a human being could "handle" it. It seems from the article that if someone sent mail addressed to "Suite 535 at 153-01 Jamaica Ave," if it was fictional, the mail would be returned as no such address.

Nah, it’s a UPS store:

Suite 535...Box 535. Just semantics. I’ve done it myself in the past.

Now, why he’s paying $350/mo for it is a good question.

The thing that pisses me and a lot of others off is that Meeks, Rangle, and similar crooks get a slap on the wrist (and a sissy slap, at that) and nothing else happens. I guess it's okay to steal $97,000 and hide it in a freezer, as long as you're a politician. Pelosi promised a “squeaky clean” House, and yet it turns out to be one of the dirtiest in history. The Nov elections should have just been a start to a complete House cleaning.

Well that answers the question about the address. But it doesn’t answer the question of motive. It needs some investigation.

I hear you and couldn’t agree more.

Any time a Congressperson is found guilty of gross ethics violations or breaking criminal laws they should be expelled from the House, period.

If they broke criminal laws they should be investigated, charges filed and prosecuted just as Jefferson was. Sadly, this seldom happens.

I’d say the motive is a cheap business address, but like I said, investigate the slimeball.

"I’d say the motive is a cheap business address"

Being that he's a Democrat I'd suspect the motive goes far beyond a cheap business address.

Meeks a good solid demonrat. All he has to say is he didn’t know. The worse that can happen is censure; then it’s back to business as usual.

$325 a month seems awfully small time if this is a scam of some sort. Could just be a virtual office as another poster suggested. Now, if he is paying rent for a 100 or 200 of these ‘virtual’ offices, then there may be something going on...

You’re correct, but this is just another thing in his dealings. He’s already under investigation for alleged ethics violations so the CBC will continue to scream racism.
