Texas Republicans Gain Supermajority in House
Texas Tribune ^ | 12/11/2010 | Ross Ramsey

State Rep. Allan Ritter, D-Nederland, is telling associates he will switch to the Republican Party next week. Ritter was not immediately available for comment. That would give the GOP a 100-member supermajority in the Legislature's lower chamber — a number that allows them to pass constitutional amendments and other matters without seeking support from the Democrats.

Oh my how the mighty have fallen. It was such a short time ago when the Dems fled Texas to another State to frustrate the Republicans. Actions can have consequences, and sometimes voters don’t forgive. Welcome to political purgatory ya steenkin’ Dems.

The question of whether or not there would be a supermajority. The race in HD 48 isn't over yet, but now that doesn't even matter anymore.

Word is that Rep. Aaron Pena is also considering a party switch, which would give the GOP another Hispanic member. The GOP is becoming more big tent by the day (might need a bigger tent).

I’d like to see an Arizona-style immigration law, but with even more teeth.

Texas Republicans Gain Supermajority in House

Does that bode well for conservatives in Texas?

The only thing that will stop a Republican agenda at this point is the Senate. I know people complain about Straus, but even with Straus as speaker, there will be Republican committee chairs (there are simply not enough Ds) and there are enough votes.

The Senate is where things will be held up. D's can still break the quorum there, and I suspect they will, especially when it comes to redistricting. I expect several special sessions this year.

Feel certain I can plug an aggravating CAVITY with Zinc Oxide and 100% Clove Oil, but this is much better news. So if the DEMS leave the State House now, does it matter LOL.....

The House will probably pass something similar, but the Senate won’t, and even if they did, Perry would veto it.

A republican agenda can be worthy of stoppage at times, no?

If Joe Straus is kept as Speaker, it means the Democrats will still be in control though. He spent the last session as nothing more than a tool for them.

Depends on what they’re trying to pass. And of course, the Senate is to serve as a more deliberative body. With the budget and redistricting on the table though, we’ll see how much actually gets done. Like I said, special sessions are definitely going to occur. It’s going to be a long summer in 2011.

When I moved to TX in 1973 it was nearly a 100% Dem state, except for Sen. John Tower. Then John Connelly (former Gov.) switched parties. And so it goes. I was there for the initial elections of both Ron Paul and Tom DeLay. And so it goes.

Have to disagree. Straus's style suggests that it won't happen. For your scenario to occur, Straus would have to strong-arm the members, and he won't do that (didn't do it last session at any rate).

Not to mention, with questions about his credentials, he will have to place Republicans as chairs of all committees, and there aren't enough Democrats to stop anything from coming out of committee.
