Goodbye, "Guiding Light." Hello, YouTube.
Procter & Gamble Co., whose sponsorship and production of daytime TV dramas helped coin the term "soap operas," has pulled the plug after 77 years. Instead, the maker of Tide detergent, Ivory soap and Olay skincare is following customers online with a big push on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.
"The digital media has pretty much exploded," marketing chief Marc Pritchard said in an interview. "It's become integrated with how we operate, it's become part of the way we do marketing."
The last P&G-produced soap opera, "As The World Turns," went off the air in September. The show was the leading daytime soap for decades, but had lost two-thirds of its audience at the end.
Over the years, P&G produced 20 soap operas for radio and TV. But ratings for daytime dramas have been sinking for years, as women, their target audience, increasingly moved into the workplace, switched to talk and reality shows, and spent more time using online media and social networking sites.
P&G, the world's biggest advertiser, still buys individual commercials on daytime dramas. But the dollar amount has shrunk. P&G won't say by how much.
Dori Molitor, whose WomanWise LLC agency specializes in marketing brands to women, says big companies are realizing that social media is an efficient way to connect with customers.
"Social media has become mass media, and for women especially," she said. "I think for all marketers, these one-way, 30-second (TV) spots are very expensive, and are less effective for the way that women make decisions."
Marketing experts say the biggest companies were slow to adapt to the rapid rise of social networks, but beverage rivals Coca-Cola Co. and Pepsico Inc., and P&G and Unilever PLC and Johnson & Johnson are among those quickly making up for lost time.

ALL TV is garbage and pro-Obama. These soaps became soft core porn for geriatrics. When ObamaCare kicks in - the rest of the soaps audiences will be dead.

Denial Amid Disruption
I am REALLY glad As the World Turns has been put out of it’s misery.
It used to be DVR’d here in this house EVERY day.
Ugh
Now if only The Young and the Restless would follow suit....
I know whereof you speak. The DVR in this household is a “shared device.” The problem with putting your foot down is when someone else puts their foot down on top of yours...
ABB Thank you for the Christmas cheer
I've looked at what I currently record and it's mostly sports-related talk shows (ESPN's First Take, SportsNation, Around the Horn, and Pardon the Interruption) and a few documentary series (MythBusters and sometimes new episodes of Modern Marvels).
Small wonder why advertisers are now clamoring to get onto Google's AdMob and Apple's iAd mobile device advertising systems.
if anything could possibly prove more corrosive to the female brain than sitting around watching soaps, it would have to be reading Tweets about Tide and Ivory Soap all day long.
The only thing i usually ever DVR is old Star Trek episodes lol.
I do have 6 Walking Deads on there that i gotta watch soon.
I’m able to watch Netflix on-demand on my tv through my PS3 and just discovered recently that they have TONS of great documentaries on there.
When i rarely do watch tv nowadays thats pretty much what i watch.
It’s just the two of us here so I’m ditching cable tv real soon.....
I Will sit and watch Hells kitchen once a week with the missus though.
What a pathetic crew Chef Ramsey has on his show this season, sheesh.
Can’t wait for someone to post all 9 hours of Bernie Sander’s Senate rant..
