Virginia Republicans have paved the way for former Sen. George Allen's (R-Va.) comeback in 2012, but a rematch of one of 2006's nastiest Senate contests is still far from a forgone conclusion.
The speculation about Allens return has put the pressure on Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.), who some Democrats think is ambivalent about another run in 2012.
(snip)
The one conservative who could give Allen the toughest time in a primary is state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who has made national headlines by helping lead the charge on the state level against implementation of the healthcare law.

There is no one to the right of center to run in Virginia?
Dems are out of OPM.
The Attorney General is very conservative.
I thought that Allen ran a very poor campaign the last time, allowing himself to get scuttled by that maccaca nonsense was one of the dumbest political stunts in recent memory.
If Cuccinelli runs, he’s my man.
Not sure Cuccinelli will throw his hat in this ring, Del Bob Marshall (PWC) has already declared he is running. Supervisor Corey Stewart (PWC) is thinking about running. It will be a crowded field - and aside from Allen, a very conservative field.
I am a huge KC supporter too, he is my guy.
Well, that’s good news if Mr. C decides to keep his day job, LOL. Those guys in Prince William seem to have their act together as far as illegal immigration goes anyway.
I was a real Allen fan when he was governor but whenever he decided to run for the Senate he seemed to be different. Maybe it was watching that pitiful excuse for a campaign he ran. Up until the last election when we got McDonald and Cuccinelli, I was starting to think that there was something wrong with Republicans in VA. They all seemed like they didn’t really want the job, and it was mystifying to watch ordinarily brilliant men turn into idiots when they opened their mouth in public.
Who would the TEA PARTY (if not fragmented) essentially get behind over there? I know they dont endorse candidates per se, but they do field armies in support of certain candidates, especially in the general election if that person is taking on a big spinding Lib Dem Progressive Socialist.
Agreed. Allen’s weak conservatism pales in comparison to his poor campaigning; Marshall might actually be too stridently conservative, if such is possible. KC seems to strike the right balance.
TC
We’ve gone from a Macaca Moment to a Macaca Era.
Go! Go! Cuccinelli!
Well, first, I think spending time defining how leftie Webb is and not letting him go right in the next two years is number one on the agenda...no quarter for Webbie.
Second, while I like the immigration fight in Pr Wm Co, and know from personal experience how this has been fought, I’m not a fan of Stewart.
Last, Cooch would be great, love his positions but he and all better “man up” or the WaPo will make mincemeat of him and No Va will drink the kool aid more than usual.
Allen’s crappy campaign as well as the lousy leadership VA Pubbys had and Allen staying “inside the Beltway” afterward makes him an unattractive, has-been kind of candidate...
IMHO!!!!!!
If Ken Cuccinelli runs, he has my vote and support, however, I think he will complete his term at VA Attorney General...he is doing such good things for conservatives at that position.
Completely agree! It’s SOOOOO nice to be in VA these days!
(My brother is in So CA and we keep telling him to hurry up and move before CA becomes part of Mexico...)
I just think if KC does run for the Senate, it will be REALLY ugly...and Webb has no scruples about “going there”...
In full disclosure, I am an Allen loyalist. He has my support as long as he’s in the race.
Others considering, as listed are Bob Marshall, Corey Stewart, Brigadier General Bert Mizusawa (who lost in the primary against Scott Rigell), Tea Party Chair Jamie Radtke and on an outside chance, Tom Davis. It’s a crowded field.
I don’t think Cuccinelli will go for the Senate. Not this time anyway.
I've always liked Allen but never thought he was the sharpest knife in the drawer.
The idea that he could ever run for President {years ago} was laughable.
Let him run for gov of Virginia then retire to fish and watch his redskins play whatever it is that the redskins play.
Before you skins fans start flaming, I'm a stillers fan and make no apologies for last year. We stunk, but that's over, we move on and we'll see what happens as this season continues.
I don't think that Webb runs again. Here's why. He's never liked campaigning, and the endless fund raising associated with it. He hasn't done much of it..his war chest is small. At best, it'd be a difficult campaign, and even if he manages to win, he'd more than likely be in the minority in the Senate, and the Dem caucus after 2012 will be much more liberal. He won't feel comfortable.
So, if he decided NOT to run, you're probably lookign at a Dem primary..which will force the Dem candidates further to the left, thus making it far more likely that the GOP picks up the seat.
GOP has already opted for a primary, not a convention.
If Webb doesn’t run, others being mentioned are Tim Kaine and Tom Perriello.
Cucinelli, Allen, Santorum and King (from Iowa not NY) were on the stage together at the Virginia Tea Party convention. The topic was federalism. The audience LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Cucinelli. Allen’s reception was decidedly cooler. Santorum was a total disappointment. I really liked King as well.
I told one of Allen’s guys that Allen needs to drop the “Mr. Jefferson’s” this and “Mr. Jefferson’s” that. That is soooo old and sounds stupid. I know it’s been his schtick for a long time. But it really came off like he was trying too hard to curry favor with the Tea Party.
I don’t think Allen can assume the Tea Party will support him...especially if Cuccinelli gets in the race.
