Don't shoot messenger for revealing uncomfortable truths
The Australian ^ | 12/7/10 | Julian Assange

Posted on 12/07/2010 6:38:54 PM PST by SmithL

IN 1958 a young Rupert Murdoch, then owner and editor of Adelaide's The News, wrote: "In the race between secrecy and truth, it seems inevitable that truth will always win."

His observation perhaps reflected his father Keith Murdoch's expose that Australian troops were being needlessly sacrificed by incompetent British commanders on the shores of Gallipoli. The British tried to shut him up but Keith Murdoch would not be silenced and his efforts led to the termination of the disastrous Gallipoli campaign.

Nearly a century later, WikiLeaks is also fearlessly publishing facts that need to be made public.

I grew up in a Queensland country town where people spoke their minds bluntly. They distrusted big government as something that could be corrupted if not watched carefully. The dark days of corruption in the Queensland government before the Fitzgerald inquiry are testimony to what happens when the politicians gag the media from reporting the truth.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

These things have stayed with me. WikiLeaks was created around these core values. The idea, conceived in Australia, was to use internet technologies in new ways to report the truth.

WikiLeaks coined a new type of journalism: scientific journalism. We work with other media outlets to bring people the news, but also to prove it is true. Scientific journalism allows you to read a news story, then to click online to see the original document it is based on. That way you can judge for yourself: Is the story true? Did the journalist report it accurately?

Democratic societies need a strong media and WikiLeaks is part of that media. The media helps keep government honest. WikiLeaks has revealed some hard truths about the Iraq and Afghan wars, and broken stories...

Major André was a well-liked and well-known British officer when he was captured by a few Westchester militiamen and found with incriminating papers. General Washington felt dreadful about having to execute him, but had no choice.

This Manning guy is a ticked off gay who sold his country down the river...yep, hardly similar.

I understand fully the difference between a kingdom and a republic, and between Spartan and American culture.

I’m still not sure what in the world all this has to do with the “kill the messenger” quote, or the actual topic at hand (wikileaks). It was a quote from a movie, not an endorsement of Sparta, Spartan government, Spartan life, infanticide, or homosexuality.

Good grief.

Sorta makes ya wonder if select Powers That Be in the Pentagon/gooberment aren't more interested in creating bullshyte "surveys" in the interest of letting themselves come out of the closet... than in, ya know, SECURING the Republic.

Either way it's a Charlie Foxtrot that requires the attention of We The People... but unfortunately the Sheeple are more interesting in who's winning "Dancing with the Stars" between commercials for Viagra and Soma.

[It was a quote from a movie]
Yes, and unfortunately individuals, messengers, in our culture increasingly demonstrate a simplistic worldview that is pretty much limited to "quoting" the message that Hollywood has indoctrinated them to regurgitate.

Individuals like Private Manning for example who, like other desensitized Useful Idiots in his generation, are very much products of that same subversive propaganda machine.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the movie you quoted wasn't one of Private Manning's all time favorites.
[I’m still not sure what in the world all this has to do with the “kill the messenger”]
Wikileaks was also one of the repositories that helped disseminate the Climategate documents. Would you have tossed Assange down the well for that?

It's pretty clear he's an arrogant twit who stupidly thinks with the little head between his legs more than with the one allegedly atop his shoulders - but I'm not so sure the case against him is as cut and dried as some would like it to be.

Comparing archived versions of Wikileaks to the present incarnation, it's clear the focus has shifted to primarily undermining the United States.  The obvious question is - Why?

Like it or not, after WWII the USA was cast into the role of playing the World's Policeman.  It's a responsibility that an honorable nation like the USA is naturally drawn toward carrying.

So the question of Why is best answered by understanding Who has the most to gain from undermining Law and Order --- and that would be the usual organized criminal suspects - especially those presently in control of the Russian kleptocracy, for whom the tactic of sexual entrapment and blackmail is a trick as aged as the world's other, oldest, profession.

Still want to toss him down the well before we get a complete transparent story regarding who's pulling the string?

In the meantime, the reality is the information has been tossed off the truck into the middle of the road.  It's a safe assumption that America's enemies are, right now, happily sifting through it all - so, NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD FREEPERS TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR COUNTRY.

We must prepare to do what FReepers always do:  Assimilate the available information with the objective of applying Logic and Reason toward securing our FREE Republic.

"...that truth is great and will prevail if left to herself, that she is the proper and sufficient antagonist to error, and has nothing to fear from the conflict, unless by human interposition disarmed of her natural weapons, free argument and debate, errors ceasing to be dangerous when it is permitted freely to contradict them."

(1) Lighten up. Its a movie.

You’ll be pleased to know, most liberals (Hollywood and otherwise) hated it and whined that it was pro-Bush, pro-war propaganda, anti-gay (history aside, the Spartans in the movie derogatorily referred to the Athenians “boy-lovers”), racist, xenophopic, anti-Islamic, sexist, pro-masculine, anti-feminist junk. Read the Amazon reviews. Funny stuff.

(2) Releasing internal emails from “climate scientists” is not the same thing as releasing classified information about foreign affairs, war operations, etc.

First, I’m not a “climate scientist”, and really don’t care if they are spied on. They should be spied on. Honestly, I hope that we have a CIA guy that was on the original recipient list. Second ... I am an American, and do care when we’re spied on by someone bent on derailing just wars and undermining our country.

In short, he gets a pass from me on Climategate, and should be tried for espionage for the rest of this mess.

As someone on FNC pointed out this morning, there's a difference between journalism and espionage.

He is no ‘messenger’, he is a hacker who engages in espionage. He is no different than a Soviet spy who recruits American traitor operatives to sell information.

Add to that, I see Paristwelve received a virtual version of the punishment for those who support spies.

no he should not be the first shot at all.

FOX slammed wikileaks this morning for disclosing info and then went on to say how the Libyans told the Uk that they had best release the terrorist.

Now FOX , NY Times etc and the rest have no problem releasing info wikileaks puts out but has a problem wikileaks releasing the info.

WTH hypocrisy.
The real villain here is the private and the media who are telling the public that this is all wikileaks but never mentioning the private.
WHY?
Because he’s a queer who stole the info because of don’t ask.

you want to shoot someone then get this queer private who stole the info because of a queer agenda and get the chain of command for being so switched off.

>>history aside
Uhuh.  A little too much of that going on these days...  No thanks.

Odd how they've never made a movie about that time when ZBigniew Brzezinski instigated and funded a little thing called the Islamic Revolution of 1979.  Maybe Mr. Gobbels & Co. don't have the script quite finished yet....
>>(1) Lighten up. Its a movie.
Right, Lighten up - it's just ass-flossed propaganda from the usual subverters of American morality.   And never mind that the "Hellenistic-paganistic idea of homo-eroticism and militarism" are the REALITY of the culture the movie glorifies.

"It's a great brainwashing process which goes very slow and is divided into four basic stages.

The first stage being "demoralization"... "

2. The next stage is destabilization....

3. The next stage of course is crisis,

"As a 19 then 20 year old boy, my managers and handlers taught me the ins and outs of mortgage fraud, drugs, sex, and money, money, and more money. My friend and manager handed out crystal methamphetamine to loan officers in a bid to keep them up and at work longer hours. At any given moment inside the restrooms - cocaine and meth was being snorted by my estimates more than a third of the staff, and more than half the staff manipulating documents to get loans to fund and more then 75% just completely made falses tatements on 1003s regarding stated income etc to get loans funded."

Crisis - are we there yet?

How many more Private Mannings and Christopher Jared Warrens do they need to produce before folks understand that what comes out of Hollywood these days is almost never just a movie without some sort of agenda riding along?

Mel Gibson is honest about that - and that honesty is one of the reasons Conservatives generally support his work product, and the Hollywood mainstream hates him.

>>should be tried for espionage for the rest of this mess.
Given the shift in his focus - I agree.    But he wasn't arrested for that...

So we'll see.

everyone is falling for the media’s lies and manipulation.

The person to blame is not wikileaks it is the private who stole the info because of his queer agenda.
Now the media will not talk about the real villain because it hurts their queer agenda and many are falling for the media’s lies and manipulation
