The world's largest army? America's hunters
Redding.com ^ | December 6, 2010

I don't spend my fall weekends tramping around the woods in pursuit of a buck, but a lot of my friends and neighbors do.

This blogger adds up all the hunters in just a handful of states, and comes to a striking conclusion:

The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed. That's great. There were over 600,000 hunters.

Allow me to restate that number. Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world - more men under arms than Iran; more than France and Germany combined - deployed to the woods of a single American state to help keep the deer menace at bay.

But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who are in the woods of Pennsylvania this week. Michigan's 700,000 hunters have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia, and it is literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.

His point? America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.

Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.

If your target is too small, get a bigger target!

Actually, the RF was saying 250 - 270. Close.

Old fashion guns! Ha,this isnt gun smoke! Partner today we use modern guns, several ar15s, many ak47s , only old as u refer to is1 of several rem. 700’s and a whole lot more. So im only 1 man ,now add the other hundreds of thousands AMERICAN hunters on our soil. Im sorry but I must disagree, never under estimate us back woods country boys.....

An old topic, but one that I felt I should comment upon...

It’s not just that this army owns guns.

Many of them also own lots of other stuff useful in wartime.

Four-wheelers, for example. Trucks and other off-road vehicles. Boats, too.

Most have an intimate knowledge with the lay of their local land. They know all the backroads and trails, many of them not showing up on Google. They know how to get from place to place the quickest, where the choke points might be, etc. Plus, they’re equipped with GPS’s and other navigational devices.

Add in the fact that they’re well equipped to operate under extreme conditions, many times with camouflage clothing specifically suited to local conditions, which allows them to blend in undetected.

Sure, they own firearms, but it’s more than that. They have skills and equipment which are readily adapted for war.

I don’t think invasion will ever be a threat in our lifetime.

“If this were the 19th and early 20th century this would be a valid point. One hunter or a million with a 7mm against satellite guided missiles operated from thousands of miles away is not much of a defense.”

A million satellite guided missiles? :) You place too much faith in technology.
