Contrail drift is understandable. What amazes is to see an airplane being blown sideways by the jet stream, with max winds of about 150 mph, faster than it makes forward progress at about 500 mph.

Hey, that is cool! I've been working on how to do that -- but I want to include the sweep of twilight colors and the earth's shadow across the sky after the sun is below the horizon.

Probably the best part of this exercise (aside from the great interaction with thinkers like you), is learning new tools, and pushing the limits of older ones.

I've been thinking about trying the same sunset thing with "Stellarium" -- but I'm not sure it will produce movie recordings like you made... (If you haven't tried stellarium, I recommend it highly -- and it's free!)

Do you believe the small dark images at the top of that photo are the actual object creating the contrails in those photos?

If you only knew who you were talking to much less how stupid you sound saying it, you’d just go hide somewhere.

How far does a missile travel in three minutes? Come on, sharpen that google-foo and give at least a wild ass guess.

“All systems that navigate based on a global algorithm fall in that category.”

Oh, because you say so? Well, we experts at navigation systems and rocket science do not agree with you.

You’re just another example of an uneducated underachiever that wants to be the center of a technical discussion he isn’t qualified to even listen to. Stupid people should just shut the Hell up and learn for once. This is a prime example of the dumbing down of America: Stupid people that think they know something and are just mouthing off instead of listening and learning.

If you really knew anything about rocket science and charting you’d be able to pinpoint the impact site of that missile just from the video. I could, but I also know that was an airplane and wasn’t so feeble minded as to be fooled into thinking I was watching a missile launch just because I want to be drama queen.

"missileers"

The Air Force Missileers deny these feebleminded nitwits as part of their career field. Thank you in advance for refraining from including them by name. /drippy-drippy-sarcasm

What else would it be? Those photos match the portions of Leyvas’ video where there is a break in the contrail and the object continues on while making a much shorter contrail that quickly dissipates.

You posted this.

You still haven’t explained how a missile stayed in that airspace for ten minutes and wasn’t long gone as a real missle would be.

You were talking about ten minutes not three.

I do know from recent searches that the shuttle reaches 46,000 ft in the first minute and 13 seconds. I also know from watching videos of shuttle launches that it is visible to the unaided eye for more than three minutes after launch.

Do you have a new point to make here since your other one was shot down?

I extended your plotted line of site from the Leyvas video to the approximate location of the UPS902 flight path. Not surprisingly, it intersects almost exactly the lat/long of where Flightaware says UPS902 was at 5:15.

I'll go through the steps I took below and I invite anyone to follow the same steps and identify anything I've done that isn't accurate based on known data...

1. We know exactly when the Cargo Law photo was taken, and where the camera is located and the direction it was pointed when it took the photo.

2. We know exactly where UPS902 at each minute based on the data from Flightaware. Flightaware UPS902

3. It is possible to plot the lat/long of UPS902 at when the Cargo Law camera took its photo.

4. Plotting the line of sight from the Cargo Law camera at the time of the Cargo Law contrail photo was taken crosses the flightpath of UPS902 at almost exactly the lat/long of the aircraft for that time as recorded on Flightaware.See this post

Therefore, it is safe and logical to conclude that the Cargo Law camera took a photo of the UPS902 contrail.

Now, lets take a look at the Leyvas video, and specifically a still from the video that shows Long Beach harbor.

We don't know the exact time the video was taken, but we do know it was sometime around 5:15. Plotting a line of site from the helicopter toward the contrail in his video provides the following (The red line of site is from the Leyvas helicopter and the yellow is from the Cargo Law camera).

Not surprisingly, the line of site from the Cargo Law camera toward UPS902, and the line of site from the Leyvas video intersect at very nearly the same point. Therefore, it is safe and logical to conclude that the contrail in the Leyvas video is the same contrail photographed by the Cargo Law camera. And since we already know the Cargo Law camera photographed UPS902, we now also know Leyvas did too.

Change “line of site” at several points in the previous post to “line of sight”. Not sure why that was stuck in my brain.

Have you ever proffered any hard data to prove your point?

Come on, prove it was a missile.

I was thinking of something more along these lines:

Except not young or attractive.

Exactly. But Leyvas does not agree that Warren’s later photos represent the object that created the contrail. He thinks those photos only display the drifting contrail, after the object that created the contrail disappeared. And that is the basis of his argument that the object only remained in view for 2 to 3 minutes.

Leyvas has no time stamps, and he is going by memory in claiming the object remained in view only 2-3 minutes, and he rejects these later views in Warren’s photos as representing the object that created the contrail.

So the only piece of evidence behind the assertion that the object was only in view 2 to 3 minutes is questionable at best. Its not even evidence, its based on Leyvas’ subjective memory of the length of time it remained in view, and it does not take into consideration that most objective viewers consider those later photos as clearly displaying the object (still) creating the contrail.

You're right. I don't know about anyone else's universe...but in mine, if that were a vertical smoke column at sunset the lower (dispersed) part would be dark while the higher part would be in light. Now, if it were a horizontal contrail of a plane headed east... The westernmost dispersed part would be brightly lit, while the easternmost part would be headed into shadow... Say... ;-)

Also, in my universe the airspace around LA is not exactly no-mans land. I think a few pilots would notice a big missile blowing up through their controlled airspace. I think they'd get on the radio and demand to know what the {expletive} was going on. However, a routine contrail viewed from their perspective wouldn't even rate a second look - other than being kind of pretty at sunset.

Obviously I’m talking to an idiot.

One who never heard of Johanes Kepler, who proved that you know nothing long before rocketry even existed. An ICBM has to obey Kepler’s laws, and I know that you have no idea what that even means.

Keep on shooting off your ignorant mouth; its amusing anyway.

You are comparing the shuttle, a beast of a vehicle, to a missile? Again, just how stupid are you? Ten minutes or three, it simply doesn’t matter. A missile isn’t anywhere near your field of view in just one minute. Of course, to you nerds, you couldn’t care less because, to you, you are a national hero, calling out an enemy missile near our shores, but you are completely delusional and not even close to living in reality. You are not a hero. That wasn’t a missile. The US military doesn’t need you to point out a missile to them. They are experts at such things. There are a number of sensor systems looking at that airspace at all times and none of them are going to miss a missile. You, of course, do not know these facts so you are stupid enough to keep yelling “MISSILE!”, as though no one else understands. We do. We know. You don’t.

P.S. YO U may have only seen three minutes of the video but the complete video was ten minutes. In the cameraman’s interview he stated he filmed ten minutes. The rest of the video shows the “missile” streaking over LA towards the East. Of course, you geniuses never bothered to ask about the rest of the video and what was in it. You are satisfied with those few minutes that make you seem important by calling out there must have been a missile.

BRAVO!! Triangulation -- I knew you would figure out a way do it with the materials and tools at hand!

My new tagline honors you!

Is there any direction the "missle [sic] folks" can turn now to prop up their mania?

Y'know, even I have kept this issue technical and apolitical (that's "without politics" for you folks in Rio BØzo...) Aside from a couple of swipes at the Kenyan ursurper (generally in line with mainline FReeperdom) I don't recall saying anything political on a Contrail thread for a full month.

That's not because I was staying away from conservative politics -- it's because aircraft, contrails, bearings, distances, photos, etc -- simply aren't political. And anyone who has tried to make this non-event political is not in line with solid conservatism.
