ROME A speeding car plowed head-on into a group of cyclists in southern Italy on Sunday morning, killing eight of them, officials said. The driver had been smoking marijuana, police said.
Bent, mangled bikes were strewn about the scene, and the sheet-draped corpses dotted the two-lane road near Lamezia Terme, in the Calabrian "toe" of boot-shaped Italy where the accident occurred.
In addition to the eight cyclists killed, four people were injured, said Gianluca Gioia, a spokesman for ANAS, the agency that runs Italy's state roads and highways. Police confirmed the toll.

Police said the Moroccan driver “was under the influence of drugs and moreover was driving without a license”.
First reports said the accident occurred when the driver lost control of his car while trying to overtake another on a main road in the Catanzaro region of Calabria.
He was unable to brake in time and hit the cyclists head on before careening into a ditch.
SEVEN cyclists were killed and four injured when a car rammed into a group of amateur club bikers in southern Italy.
“There are seven dead and four injured,” said police.
Tests on the driver showed that he was under the influence of cannabis at the time of the accident, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
He had lost his licence seven months earlier for careless driving, the agency added.
