Hold the brownies! Bill could limit bake sales

Don't touch my brownies! A child nutrition bill on its way to President Barack Obama — and championed by the first lady — gives the government power to limit school bake sales and other fundraisers that health advocates say sometimes replace wholesome meals in the lunchroom.

...

Public health groups pushed for the language on fundraisers, which encourages the secretary of Agriculture to allow them only if they are infrequent. The language is broad enough that a president's administration could even ban bake sales, but Secretary Tom Vilsack signaled in a letter to House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller, D-Calif., this week that he does not intend to do that. The USDA has a year to write rules that decide how frequent is infrequent.

It looks like Justice Thomas was right in the Raich case, when he said:

If the majority is to be taken seriously, the Federal Government may now regulate quilting bees, clothes drives, and potluck suppers throughout the 50 States. This makes a mockery of Madison's assurance to the people of New York that the "powers delegated" to the Federal Government are "few and defined," while those of the States are "numerous and indefinite." The Federalist No. 45, at 313 (J. Madison).

He did not mention the frequency of school bake sales, but I'd say that is right in there with quilting bees and potluck suppers. And homegrown cannabis for personal medical use under the laws of your state, I might add...

Am I reading this right? Does the Federal Government really believe they have the right to regulate bake sales? Are they going to arrest teachers, one of their primary voting groups over this? We are definitely not in Kansas any more.

It is the nature of the statists. They want to dictate and regulate every aspect of our lives from a small committee in Washington DC - for the greater good dont-cha-know.

In a world of concerned patriots, there should be a million man march where all sorts of baked goods are thrown on the capitol steps - fruitcake being item of choice.

I feel like I’m in the twilight zone...

bake sales? Really?

Actually they are getting people ready for the government control of health care. Also realize the level of brainwashing going on in regards to stuff like this...of the children.

This is going beyond teaching children good nutrition. This is about teaching submission to our children. It is not about what it appears to be.

These kids are being not learning how to make choices, critically think for themselves, etc. They are being taught authority knows best!

Flash forward just 5 years, even 10 years from now. Your 11 year old daughter today, will be lecturing you on how your bad choices deny you access to a doctor. Maybe even support the death panel decision to not provide you chemotherapy for your cancer. You had to die, because you chose to be a burden on the system.

Far fetched? You didn’t think we’d be here today, just two years ago.

OK, so pot causes Clarence Thomas and me to think this way, but we're still right. Regulating bake sale frequency is not a legitimate use of the commerce power.

No matter what they are pushing at school, a child must have red-meat protein, give your kid plenty of hamburgers and eff the USDA.

The left has an insatiable need to regulate. There is no end to their lust for power and control. The center and the right need to understand that unless forcefully confronted, the left will transform society until every citizen is only a part of the Borg collective.

The statists want to control everything. It has nothing to do with children’s health.

Are they going to arrest teachers, one of their primary voting groups over this?

Probably not. The way they get away with this is to simply expect docility in the public to self impose the rules the Feds make up.

In other words, the principals and superintendents won't allow bake sales any more, and the schools will fall in line like the sheep they are.

Also, there'll be willing parents of the extreme Left persuasion ready to sue in federal court any school that dares have a bake sale and thus cause little Moonflower or whatever they named their kid to possibly be infected with fat cooties (which we all know are sponsored by (evil-redundant to them) Republicans and Corporations!).

[The law] encourages the secretary of Agriculture to allow them only if they are infrequent. ... The USDA has a year to write rules that decide how frequent is infrequent.

Just like the death-care bill provides the secretary with unlimited power to write rules, so we won't know the true effect of the bill for a long time.

This is just unbelievable -- the federal government deciding how frequently a school can hold a fund-raiser.

It's easy to say that we'll have civil disobedience and do them as often as we damn well please, but the cowed ultra-liberal school administrators will quickly (and happily) fall in line with the federal diktats, so you won't be able to hold them on school property anywhere in the country. You'll have to find another venue which will make the fund-raisers totally ineffective.

One wonders that, if you did hold an illegal fund-raiser off school property, would the school or the PTA accept the filthy, ill-gotten lucre? Or would they hold their noses and take the money?

As long as Michelle has elephantiasis of the a$$, a child who she referred to in a speech as being overweight, and a Husband who smokes, she needs to shut her mouth.

She's not doing so great with her own family.
