The second most violent city in America just approved plans to layoff half its police force, according to NBC New York.
Camden, N.J. will fire one in four city workers on Jan. 18, including half of police.
This comes just days after Newark, N.J. fired 167 police officers, which marked the biggest force reduction in 32 years.
Camden was named the second most violent city based FBI crime data that came out last week. Newark was named the 23 most violent city in America.

2. The mural artist has enough talent to get out of there.
3. One of the odd things I found when I was cleaning out my parent's house was a book on the history of Camden, N.J. I know this isn't important, but who else am I going to tell?
According to Wikipedia, since 2005 the Camden police department has been run by the state of New Jersey.
Pure BS. Most police officers do not "protect." Rather, they show up after the crime has been committed. Yes, by making an arrest, they temporaily prevent the person from committing a crime in the future, but that is not the same as protection. We are an overpoliced society. Many police forces can and should be cut.
You’re better late to the party than never...
They tried that in the past when they sent the State Police into Camden; they pulled them out very quickly due to the high number of justified shootings by the police. Like Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now, they showed the state how to win; the state lacked the resolve to do so.
I think we have may too many cops in this state; most Americans don’t see the same number of policemen that residents of bloated urban (and surrounding suburban) bureaucracies do every day. The number of municipal employees in NJ of all kinds is bizarre, from the education industry to law enforcement, fire protection, etc.; they are nice ideas, but completely unsustainable. What we are seeing now is the result of ignoring what we were seeing twenty years ago.
You’re right; the bloated police departments in our cities do little to prevent crime while running up an incredible bill. Urban law enforcement should be like the military: 4 years & out. You’ll always have a pool of interested candidates, the costs wouldn’t skyrocket due to burnt-out long-timers, and the young blood will give the gangs a run for their money.
Why do you believe the Camden PD was preventing crime and protecting citizens?
Most people who live in places like that are good people in a very, very bad situation. They’d be much better off with armed militias than with a conventional municipal union PD.
Agree completely .
I didn't say I "believe the Camden PD was preventing crime and protecting citizens".
I said "Govts Numero Uno job is to provide protection for the citizens."
While I do not want the govt making me buy health insurance or telling me I can't have salt on my French Fries at McDonalds, I do believe the police should be preventing crime/protecting citizens. We pay for that protection with our taxes...and, if we're not getting that protection, we should be talking (yelling) at our politicians to right the situation. If our politicians don't fix it, then we get new politicians.
Whether the Camden PD is doing a good job or not, I don't know. From other comments in this thread, it doesn't sound like they are. But if I lived in Camden, I'd want what I was paying for.
That literally could be what hell looks like.
