Pure BS. Most police officers do not "protect." Rather, they show up after the crime has been committed. Yes, by making an arrest, they temporaily prevent the person from committing a crime in the future, but that is not the same as protection. We are an overpoliced society. Many police forces can and should be cut.

You’re right; the bloated police departments in our cities do little to prevent crime while running up an incredible bill. Urban law enforcement should be like the military: 4 years & out. You’ll always have a pool of interested candidates, the costs wouldn’t skyrocket due to burnt-out long-timers, and the young blood will give the gangs a run for their money.
