I mentioned last week that a new Big Foodie bill opposed by a diverse coalition of limited government activists, small family farmers, and left-leaning “locovores” was coming down the pike.
Today, I’m disappointed to tell you, the regulatory expansion bill masquerading as a “safety” measure passed by a large margin — with stomach-turning Republican support.
The 15 power-grabby Republicans who voted for it:

Probably the fact that Olympia Snowe and Susanne Collins were voting for it. What other excuse do you need? I gave that A*hole campaign money, but I want my money back!

It means that it is now a felony to save your “heirloom” seeds. Real food is now illegal.

Agree. The insanity must stop. This bill gives the FDA vastly expand federal power over agriculture for a phony crisis.
The USA has the safest food supply in the world. Most of the recent food contamination events have been the result of corporate farming methods and processing practices, and not local growers using traditional methods.
This is a grossly overreaching power grab by the Feds. It will benefit the big agricultural business multinationals such as ADM and Monsanto and the scum politicians who supported this bill.
The deplorable senate passage of the bill defies the message sent by voters just two weeks ago: Americans do not want and cannot afford yet more unnecessary regulation and expansion of centralized government. It is a costly and ineffective “remedy” for a manufactured crisis.
I believe that there are 2 types of rinos.
There are those that respond to pressure whether form the left or the right. These are the veritable “weather-vanes”. They lack principles and their only goal is to get re-elected. These rinos may be the best option in deep blue states.
Then there are the rino-moles. These are the stealth liberal progressive rinos that live under the Republican banner. Some of these rinos are progressive only on certain issues. In many instances, they frustrate the conservative agenda and must be defeated even when it means that a Dem could win in the general.
In my view, we must concentrate on getting good conservatives Republicans in conservative states and we will have plenty of chances in the 2012 Senate races. We need to get rid of people like Lugar and Graham.

What was said, and did come true, is that used children's BOOKS would not be marketable at used book stores, or online sellers.

What are the strongest arguments against the bill?
According to critics, it will create higher compliance costs for smaller producers, putting them at a competitive disadvantage against corporate farmers and producers who can more easily absorb costs, fees, and possible fines.
That’s not the only type of expense. The legislation would cost the US government a total of $1.4 billion over four years, says Sen. Tom Coburn (R) of Oklahoma. One result could be higher food costs, some worry.
Others see the law as too sweeping and say it gives Washington bureaucrats, including the Department of Homeland Security, too much discretion over citizens who want to exercise control over their family’s food supply.
“You may be disposed to embrace a genetically modified, enhanced, and altered food chain, but for those of us who eat our foods unadulterated, raised naturally, and without benefit of the federal government mandating what we can and can’t eat, SB 510 is one more giant step toward consolidating total power over the lives of free citizens,” writes Michael Geer on the American Thinker blog.
Would SB 510 put America’s cornucopia under the control of a “globalist mafia” led by the World Trade Organization?
No. Some people have been concerned that the bill would give international groups more power over food matters in the US. The bill does state that the US will not knowingly break any existing agreements with the World Trade Organization, but it doesn’t cede any inspection or enforcement powers to international agencies.
Can I still share (and sell) vegetables from my garden?
Yes. Farmers who sell most of their harvest directly to restaurants, food co-ops, farm stands, and farmers’ markets wouldn’t have to register with the FDA under SB 510. And they wouldn’t be subject to the regulations in the legislation. But such farmers would still have to abide by current state laws.
Even though the bill in essence orders the FDA to be nice to local food producers, some farm groups say it ultimately doesn’t place enough limits on the agency’s power over small farmers and even backyard gardeners.
Is Uncle Sam trying to seize control of the US seed bank?
SB 510 does require inspection of seed-cleaning machines – a provision that could make it harder for farmers to collect their own seeds and could benefit large seed producers like Monsanto. But the law does not specifically restrict the ability of Americans to collect and store seeds for their own purposes.
If it is harder for farmers to collect their own seeds, that could mean more dominance of genetically modified seed stocks, which farmers have to relicense every year. “Once you use that GMO seed the traditional genetic diversity of the seed bank dwindles and is lost,” Kimberly Labno of the Penn State Cooperative Extension told the Phawker.com blog.
Who supports SB 510? Who’s against it?
Supporters include General Mills, Kraft Foods, Monsanto, and the National Association of Manufacturers. Opponents include the American Grassfed Association, Family Farm Defenders, and the Small Farms Conservancy. The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture, which represents smaller farmers, has backed the bill.

According to a recent CNN article, the Center for Science in the Public Interest and several other groups allegedly representing “victims” of the recent salmonella outbreak, are calling on the U.S. Senate to pass the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act—also known as S.510—as the solution to the broken food system.
According to them, the bill will give the FDA the power it needs to properly regulate and prevent future illness outbreaks.
But in reality, the FDA already has the power it needs to properly regulate. It simply fails time and time again to actually do its job.
While favoring the corporate offenders responsible for the outbreaks, the FDA continually goes after small producers that produce clean food, and even against food itself (which the agency has claimed is inherently dangerous and in need of pasteurization).
In a nutshell, the agency has utterly failed to address the real problems that cause food contamination and is in desperate need of major, fundamental reform that will limit its power and help restore real food freedom.
Instead of instigating this type of reform, however, S.510 will essentially give unconstitutional control of the U.S. food supply to multinational corporations and force the U.S. to relinquish its sovereignty to international governing bodies.
