The cutting-edge treatment helps dogs grow new cartilage by injecting stem cells from their own fat, normally from the abdomen, into the affected joint. The treatment takes about three days and has an 80 percent success rate, MyFoxDC.com reported.

Hmmm, I degenerative joint disease in my knee and more than enough fat to harvest some stem cells.

ADULT stem cell ping!

Yup. Wouldn't it be great if this translates into treatment for arthritis and other degenerative joint disease for people as well as their dogs!

Awww. what a good boy. There is a back story on this as well. The family who owns him lost their son in Iraq or Afghan and this dog was his partner/pal over there. The family, obviously, really loves this doggie.

I wonder if this will help with hip dysplasia (sp?)?

A friend’s 9 year old shepard is on medication for the pain.

My two shepherds are 3 years old today (brother and sister) and “sis” is having right rear leg problems, She sort of skips when walking. She has plenty of energy and runs and plays all the time. The only time you can tell there is a problem is when she is walking. We have exrayed her hips and knees and they look great. I have been reading about Degenerative Myelopathy and pray it is’nt DM. I have an appointment with her Dr. on Monday for further action.
I ran accross a web site that does tests on DNA to check for DM. They send you a kit and you return it to them for diagnosis. Its the only place I saw that indicated they can definitely diagnosis the desease.
Has anyone ever encountered this or used an orginaziation as this?

If you haven’t tried Marjorie Zimmerman then you might want to contact her. She had a site devoted exclusively to DM (diagnosed), but it seems to be defunct. Otherwise, see her “Contact Marjorie” tag near the bottom.

http://www.mzjf.info/hgate/

She might be helpful in resources for dogs undiagnosed. I happened upon her in a GS forum (no longer around) and she had so much common sense unlike most “GS lovers” that I put a good deal of stock in her, including putting 1 of my dogs on her HG site (the other deserves it more - what a mess she is!!!). She developed the sites after I “met” her on line, and she has even promoted GS health issues and her site in the GS Review since.

Hubby has it in his knee too, mine is hands, and 4 disc. Why are we being given ‘pig guts’ which is very temporary and takes 5 shots (about $350 per shot), instead of this?

Stricter requirements for approval for human use? Whatever the reason, let's hope they advance to people soon.

I suspect it hasn’t received FDA approval yet; hopefully in the next year or two.....
