Customs has always had that jurisdiction when it was part of the Treasury department..

Customs, and only because it is coming from outside the borders.

I see the corellation but who informed them in the first place? More friends of Obama? Is it truely a copyright infringement, then there are laws already enacted to take care of this stuff. If it is not, are we dealing with limiting competition?

>> ICE has jurisdiction over music and knockoffs—why? <<

Historically speaking, most copyright and trademark infringement has involved imported merchandise. Therefore, enforcement of the copyright and trademark laws became a major part of the responsibilities of the U. S. Customs Service.

For example, "bootleg" or "pirate" tapes and CD's imported from Asia used to be one of the major types of copyright infringement. Customs agents had to be constantly on the lookout for this sort of material at our ports of entry.

Nowadays, most copyright infringement probably involves music and video downloads over the Internet. Some of this activity crosses national borders, some is purely inside the USA. But since it's almost impossible to distinguish "imported" vs. "domestic" downloads, I guess the job of enforcement just goes by default to ICE.

(In the meantime, our friendly neighborhood ICE agents still have to stay on the job of protecting us from the danger of fake Rolexes made in Hong Kong and fake Gucci bags made in Timbuktu!)

Well, democrats want as many illegals here as possible... and they want every city to be a sanctuary, so what does that leave ICE with? Dems would love to round up conservatives and shove them off to camps, but it's too early for that... and they gotta keep the agency funded...

I don't get it either. ICE has no enforcement responsibility for copyright infringement that I know of.

If it were FBI or Commerce I could understand.

But ICE?!?!?!?

As if we do not have enough terrorists to keep them busy? Is Homeland Security charged with this particular task?

My guess is it’s because Customs is the agency responsible for catching counterfeit/pirated merchandise entering the U.S. economy.

This is dangerous watch-carefully, its only a matter of time before they start shutting down web-sights allegedly for this proposes but in fact because they host speech that that is offensive to the government’s leaders.

The realm of copyrighted material is not only obscenely broad, they have over the last several years worked to make it even more broad! By allowing the copyrighting of such common words as “Droid” 5o George Lucas cause 30 years ago he used it in a Star Wars film.

Thats right not only are copyrights obscenely broad, they last for an obscenely long time. The U.S. Constitution authorizes congress to secure a monopoly ONLY for a limited peroid of time. But copy-writes specify life +70 years.

If a man cannot make a profit off a monopoly over his creation during his life time what motivation is there those that inherit his work to create their own works?

Lets be fair here, lets say he creates his work shortly before his death is not 20 years as in the case of patents reasonable?

What motivation is there for an inverter to keep inventing or improving upon his/her creation, if exclusive milking write is secured to them not only for what is effectively their life time but also their children’s and possibly grandchildren lifetime as well...

My point is Federal copyright laws are insanely corrupt, they now act to stifle innovation rather then drive it due to their unending length.

What else do they have to do? They sure aren’t guarding our borders.
