Homeland Security seizes domain names
The Hill ^ | 11/26/2010 | Sara Jerome

The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting down websites that facilitate copyright infringement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak.

ICE appears to be targeting sites that help Internet users download copyrighted music, as well as sites that sell bootleg goods, such as fake designer handbags.

The sites are replaced with a note from the government: "This domain named has been seized by ICE, Homeland Security Investigations."

For instance, 2009jersey.com, 51607.com, and amoyhy.com have each been seized.

One of the site owners told TorrentFreak that his site was shut down without any notice or warning.

The effort come as Congress considers the Combatting Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA). Critics, including Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) say it is too heavy-handed. He has vowed to put a formal hold on the bill.

Hmmm. 51607.com only had a couple of dozen visitors per day. Very small-fry.

That point is long past. Ask yourself, “what would happen if Fox News or FreeRepublic got yanked in the next 5 minutes?” The answer, sadly, is nothing that could bring them back. Lots of Congressional “investigations” and one or two editorials in the MSM, then just the sound of crickets...

Wow, glad you filled us in. “Hey guys, time to give up...we’re done for.”

Yeah you’re right...fighting this tyrany will be futile...better to just give up now.

I think we all have other things we’d rather do anyways. This response makes things so much easier...for the regime.

and China is feeling more like pre-Obama America. I have been travelling to China for years (my wife is from Shanghai) and am starting to feel more free and safe when I am over there. Think about it. They protect their borders and punish their criminals. They educate their children instead of indoctinating and preverting their minds. They are very practical, industrious, trending toward more capitalism, free enterprise, not waiting for handouts (if you don’t work, you don’t eat) but I am seeing more compassion and assistance for people truly in need. And while they are more Godless, they seem ironically morally superior. And they don’t want to come here anymore. Two years ago my Chinese cousin was planning on coming to America to study. Now he says it is not worth it seeing what America has become under obama. I know I am babbling and off topic. It’s all very sad indeed

too much of the general populous is ignorant and blind

It has been sickening to me the number of people that I know who think I am being a tin foil hat yo yo when complaining about TSA searches. They insist that it is no big deal, and (talk about loony) that it is making things safer.

They come right out and say they are quite willing to give up more freedom for (the illusion of) safety. Creepy.

Consider that term “Civil Asset Forfeiture.”

Although they are “seizing” the domain names, could they be using the CAF as the system?

It’s civil - - not criminal.

It’s asset forfeiture, not seizure.

Therefore, they skate around all criminal law.

Oh well. When one site is shut down, another pops up.

I was watching “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” last night (I’ve already paid to see it in a theater and will buy the BluRay when it comes out). I’m still looking for another streaming site for FoxNews. If Fox would just let people buy streaming, we would all be doing it. They are just snippy about it and it forces people to stream it themselves.

If demand is there, the sites will be there.

How about if ICE closes the border? They can close torrent sites after.

And ICE has jurisdiction over music and knockoffs—why?

Well, democrats want as many illegals here as possible... and they want every city to be a sanctuary, so what does that leave ICE with? Dems would love to round up conservatives and shove them off to camps, but it's too early for that... and they gotta keep the agency funded...

Personally, I’ve always questioned the legality of live torrent feeds but I don’t see where it is the government’s job to shut them down, and certainly not without due process.

I have NO IDEA why I have to pay for 500 channels when I only want to watch 3 or 4 ... Every month some of my cable bill goes to PBS, CNN, C-SPAN and other liberal groups.

Within the next few months I'm going to give up and stop cable - and with it FOXNews. I have netflix - and can get local channels over the air... It's sad, but it's time.
