Homeland Security seizes domain names

The investigative arm of the Homeland Security Department appears to be shutting down websites that facilitate copyright infringement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seized dozens of domain names over the past few days, according to TorrentFreak.

ICE appears to be targeting sites that help Internet users download copyrighted music, as well as sites that sell bootleg goods, such as fake designer handbags.

The sites are replaced with a note from the government: "This domain named has been seized by ICE, Homeland Security Investigations."

For instance, 2009jersey.com, 51607.com, and amoyhy.com have each been seized.

One of the site owners told TorrentFreak that his site was shut down without any notice or warning.

The effort come as Congress considers the Combatting Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA). Critics, including Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) say it is too heavy-handed. He has vowed to put a formal hold on the bill.

>>TV is a cancer. You’ll feel better for having given it up. That includes local broadcast, by the way.<<

Actually, it’s a learning tool in our house.
The DVDs, Glenn Beck streaming and Netflix documentaries are the History Curriculum in our house.

My older daughter went from watching things like this to reading Beck, Stossel and Coulter. She is 13. The younger one likes Beck and wants to read “America Alone” by Steyn. She is saving it for a plane ride next week.

AND the seizing begins, first internet domains, eventually gold, silver and other valuables.

Right now it’s groping/disease spreading/radiation at the airports, socialized medicine, excruciating confiscation/redistribution of your paycheck, “net neutrality”, increasingly oppressive regulation, ad infinitum, etc., but what will life be like in the “land of the free” in another ten years?

Completely agree. Ask Solzhenitzyn. A search of his quotes Here.

One of my favorites: “For us in Russia communism is a dead dog. For many people in the West, it is still a living lion.”

After a flurry of last-minute lobbying from representatives of content providers including the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), a Senate committee approved the measure today by a unanimous vote.

In the last week, support for the bill known as COICA, for Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act, broadened beyond groups traditionally active in online copyright disputes to include the Newspaper Association of America, which said the legislation was needed because online piracy “undermines the investments that newspapers make in journalism.” Labor unions, including the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, argued that American workers “have suffered significant harm due to theft of copyrighted and trademarked goods.”

An ad appeared in a newspaper targeting Capitol Hill yesterday signed by groups including Major League Baseball, the NFL, Nintendo, and Viacom. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce pressed Congress to move quickly, and even Rob McKenna, Washington state attorney general, signed on to the effort.

“Those seeking to thwart this bipartisan bill are protecting online thieves and those who gain pleasure and profit from de-valuing American property,” Mitch Bainwol, RIAA chairman, said after today’s vote. “We congratulate Chairman Leahy and Senator Hatch for their leadership on this bill and to the Senate Judiciary Committee for its action today.” (Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat and chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee, and Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican, are cosponsors of COICA.)

I mean TV “programming.” We use our (non-digital) TV for watching movies and such, but there’s no cable or broadcast input. That way we’re in control of the content. Sounds like you’re doing something similar.

Yes!
We have an antenna for local news. We like Judge Judy but if she went away, no big loss.

I like the local weather forecasts and PBS’s Create. That’s as far as we go with tv.

Their excuse is that the domain is based offshore. The fact of the matter is that they could redirect the domain since they have control of the DNS servers. You would then need to know it’s numerical IP number to access the site.

Yes they do, US Customs had jurisdiction before the formation of DHS via the Patriot act. That jurisdiction was transferred along with the agency. We can thank our great savior W for that...

Patriot act? That was just the latest in a long train of laws passed by our legislators who don't read the bills to begin with. How many laws are there on the books already a paragraph or two waiting to be implemented by our masters? Have people forgotten the RICO statutes? Have people not heard how they have been abused without any judicial recourse by it's victims?

We keep voting the scumbags in, this is what you end up getting. We have the makings of a POLICE STATE. The laws are already in place...

As a great man once said. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions”. They always heap some good intention on us about how these laws will solve a terrible problem. It’s always good intentions. I wish they would be honest for a change and tell us the real reason they pass all these laws are their BAD INTENTIONS..

This is dangerous watch-carefully, its only a matter of time before they start shutting down web-sights allegedly for this proposes but in fact because they host speech that that is offensive to the government’s leaders.

The realm of copyrighted material is not only obscenely broad, they have over the last several years worked to make it even more broad! By allowing the copyrighting of such common words as “Droid” 5o George Lucas cause 30 years ago he used it in a Star Wars film.

Thats right not only are copyrights obscenely broad, they last for an obscenely long time. The U.S. Constitution authorizes congress to secure a monopoly ONLY for a limited peroid of time. But copy-writes specify life +70 years.

If a man cannot make a profit off a monopoly over his creation during his life time what motivation is there those that inherit his work to create their own works?

Lets be fair here, lets say he creates his work shortly before his death is not 20 years as in the case of patents reasonable?

What motivation is there for an inverter to keep inventing or improving upon his/her creation, if exclusive milking write is secured to them not only for what is effectively their life time but also their children’s and possibly grandchildren lifetime as well...

My point is Federal copyright laws are insanely corrupt, they now act to stifle innovation rather then drive it due to their unending length.

The reason why he has to pay for 200 or 500 channels is it keeps the lib netwrks alive.

Your cable bill is divied up. Time Warner (CNN) probably has 10 channels on cable with sports, CNN, Turner, Headline Propaganda and ESPN or another one. Viacom has CBS, MYV, VH1, Nick and a few others. So every network owns at least 10 channels and probably more. Ditto Fox/Newscorp, Disney, and the scum of scum GE with NBC/CNBC/MSNBC/Universal and others.

Well each one gets about $5 to 6 a month from yoru cable bill. You may never watch any Time Warner channels but you are paying for it. The 6 networks, Bloomberg is #6, control most of the channels.

What is more insidious is Prince Al Waleed, who invests Saudi Arabia’s money for his uncle the king, has shareholdings, joint ventures and other deals with ALL of them.

Wonder why we have Islamification like the UK got?

Why? Access to Islamic and other markets. Access to probably 1.5 billion people with trillions in oil and other wealth. If you think these networks give a s**t about America or 350 million Americans - you are dreaming.

TV and Hollywood are evil. I went Galt on them and will never go back. I am sick of the endless Obama fawning and the endless “dumb white man” commercials. If you switch it on - you are supporting your serfdom and allowing your children to become slaves.

The “future” will be more Somalis trying to blow up hundreds of Christians.

There’s the beauty of COICA, under the act all they need is someone to just “claim” their intellectual property was infringed. No other pretext than that is necessary. Post a photo on this website and claim you own the copyright. They can then effectively shut you down without a court order. You have to prove you own the photo but that would take years and months through the courts. In the meantime they have effectively shut you down and put you out of business and they are not even violating your first amendment rights because that is not the reason they shut you down. It also has a heck of a chilling effect on other sites as well. Even if you don’t allow the posting of extracts etc. all you need is a user on your site to post something and you are done. And the American public will be told it’s all for our own good, after all we are stopping contraband and thievery. And I am willing to bet that all the targets will be politically motivated. We already seeing abuse of powers by the IRS asking a non profit’s opinion on israel for example. They are testing the waters, if they get away with the small acts they expand them. Now TSA wants to expand it to trains and buses. Two years is a long way away, by that time we may not have an electoral system left. What emergency military or economic will be used as a pretext for more action? I really do not like where we are headed and I fear we have become so complacent we may not be able to stop it..

Since the great majority of copyrights are owned by the upper oligarchy it is only a matter of time before they buy out any remaining copyrights down the food chain and pass laws to make copyrights property in perpetuity to heirs and descendants.
