IRVINGTON, N.J. (AP) Six people face charges after an anti-violence rally in northern New Jersey allegedly turned into a melee.
Wednesday night's march in Irvington which was intended to honor two women who were fatally shot near a school in the Essex County community last week began peacefully.
But Police Chief Michael Chase told The Star-Ledger of Newark that tempers flared when members of the Newark's Anti-Violence Coalition tried to move the demonstration into the street, despite an officer's warning to stay on the sidewalk.

Yes it was when my dad was a kid. For awhile it was known to have some of the worst girl gangs in the country. It is full of gangs now. I wouldn’t go there. But then I very rarely go over the Raritan Bridge anymore. I prefer to stay close to the ocean. And I want out of my town where they don’t allow horses. I’ve looked into PA & their taxes are worse in some places. I just need to sell this house & find a farm where I can live in peace. (maybe)
LOL. I can still remember the Newark riots & I was a little kid.
Irvington was nice, about 50 years ago.
Has there ever been an anti-violence rally or concert where this didn’t happen?
Shaking my head at you. It was awful.
Too soon? I’m sorry. No more jokes. :-\
I remember Olympic Park in Irvington. We used to go there until they tore it down.
Demographics is the key. Who lives there?
My husband lived in Irvington in 1955. I “visited” Irvington a couple of years ago, by mistake. My son and I were the only white folks there! LOL!
I used to take a shortcut on Lyons Ave to get from the Garden State Parkway to Newark Airport. The KFC on the corner had an armed guard.
ANTI-VIOLENCE rally? What did I miss here?
Seriously, you cannot make this stuff up, folks!
