Jurors considering the political money laundering case against former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on Tuesday delved deep into the evidence, but asked so many legal questions that the judge warned them that they were getting off track...
DeLay had with him a copy of Empire of the Summer Moon, a recent nonfiction book about the Comanche people and their famed chief, Quanah Parker, and a TouchPoint Bible that allows readers to find Scripture relevant to their lives.
"No demons, nor angels nor DAs can keep you separated from the love of Jesus Christ," DeLay said, playing off of a verse from Romans 8.
The jury ended the day about 4:30 p.m. by telling visiting District Judge Pat Priest, "We're making some progress, but we'd like to go home."
That brought their deliberations to four hours on Monday and seven on Tuesday.
The jury of six men and six women consists of a Republican, six Democrats, two independent conservatives and three independent liberals, DeLay said.
He said he was putting his faith of acquittal with the liberals because they were more empathetic. "I know them like they're my brothers and sisters," DeLay said.
The forewoman, a Greenpeace activist named Katie Stotts, studied anthropology at Southwestern University in Georgetown. A full list of jurors is sealed...
Several times the judge turned down jury down requests to clarify the law on money laundering. He granted their requests to review thousands of pages of e-mail messages, telephone records and a Federal Express receipt that showed when a blank check was delivered to Washington, D.C.
However, when the jury asked Priest for federal law not involved in the case, he told them, "I'm afraid you may be getting away from the decisions you must make."...

Independent liberals like Bernard Sanders (Socialist)?
Hey Your Honor, why don't you let the jurors do their job? They aren't there just to pull the lever for you.
a GREENPEACE activist is the forewoman??
an overwhelmingly liberal jury??
Oh, yes, this is a “fair” trial.... he may as well be judged by a jury of left-wing bloggers....
“The forewoman, a Greenpeace activist....”
That alone would have be packing and looking for a way out of the country.
Didn’t his lawyers even participate in the jury selection process?
So long Tom, it was nice knowing you. Maybe I can get by to see you on visiting day.
Well: Let’s give the jury a chance, but it looks like Tom is on a liberal hay ride to the Greystone Hotel.
Sounds like they can’t convict him under state law so they are trying to find something in the Federal statutes (or maybe even Scottish or Islamic law I suppose).
“putting his faith of acquittal with the liberals because they were more empathetic”
Oh, my! Liberals are the most vicious creatures on this planet. DeLay is doomed.
If he’s lynched by this kangaroo court, I expect that he will appeal the decision.
Oh, great. Greenpeace. Anthropology. Is that why DeLay lets himself be seen with a book about Native Americans as well as the Bible?
Well, it only takes one juror to deadlock. Let's hope at least one of them has the guts and honesty to do that, if necessary.

Actually, the judge is correct. The problem with this case is that it hasn't been established that if Delay did what they accuse him of that it would actually be a crime. The jury is trying to establish a crime then decide whether Delay is guilty of it or not. The judge needs to control how far afield the jury goes in establshing was a crime committed.
I thought he was found not guilty already. When is this witch hunt ever going to end?
I believe that was the federal case they were trying to develop against Mr. DeLay.
The best he can hope for is a hung jury with the Republican saving his Bacon.
Try to find a pool of conservative jurors in Austin, TX. The libs were probably fighting each other to be on the jury.
Just goes to show that show trials aren't only for foreign dictators.
Oh! Yeah! Forgot it was Austin.
