A majority of Americans want the Congress to keep the new health care law or actually expand it, despite Republican claims that they have a mandate from the people to kill it, according to a new McClatchy Newspapers-Marist poll.
The post-election survey showed that 51 percent of registered voters want to keep the law or change it to do more, while 44 percent want to change it to do less or repeal it altogether.
Driving support for the law: Voters by margins of 2-1 or greater want to keep some of its best-known benefits, such as barring insurers from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. One thing they don't like: the mandate that everyone must buy insurance.
At the same time, the survey showed that a majority of voters side with the Democrats on another hot-button issue, extending the Bush era tax cuts that are set to expire Dec. 31 only for families making less than $250,000.
The poll also showed the country split over ending the "don't ask, don't tell" policy prohibiting gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military, with 47 percent favoring its repeal and 48 percent opposing it.
The results signal a more complicated and challenging political landscape for Republicans in Congress than their sweeping midterm wins suggested.

Oh, and that election thing we had just a few weeks ago.
I don’t believe a word of this. I think Nov 2 belies these poll results.
Rasmussen has 57% wanting it repealed.
What a load of crap. We took a poll November 2 and obamacare lost! Those who couldn’t have been bothereed to vote have no say in the matter and their opinions bear no weight. Congress has a mandate to, at the very least, defund this unconstitutional monstrosity.
Typical liberal media. I don’t like the truth so I’ll just invent it.
“McClatchy Newspapers-Marist poll”
They cleverly hid their agenda by removing the “x” from their poll’s name.
Bull!!!
Let the Democrats keep believing such nonsense and they’ll lose all of the Independents to us.
It was only as recently as October of 2006 that the GOP controlled all branches of government (OK, January of 2007 if you want to get technical).
Apparently governing is so difficult that the Democrats want to give control back to us again, looking at this article.
Goebbel’s style BS. These goons really do think we’re stupid and useful idiots.
Has anyone seen boxcars and camps being readied? No doubt Mengele et al. are part of this Regime.
I don’t know what poll you are looking at Dude but its way wrong.
The extent of understanding of those “in favor” of keeping CommieCare, amounts to the simple fact that SOMEONE ELSE else will be paying for their health expenses.
An alarming percentage of the American population is perfectly good with stealing from their “rich” neighbor.
LOL!!!!! They can not be serious!!! Running a poll as bogus as this 3 weeks after the elections????
And that’s why the Democrats expanded their house seats and why Pelosi is still Speaker of the House and why all those state houses and governorships fell to Democrat hands and why the Republicans lost 6 Senate seats.
Now I understand. It’s all very clear.
It hasn’t fully kicked in yet. What has kicked in are two “feel good” provisions - you can keep your adult kid on the plan and the pre-existing condition clause. The sheep are easily deceived by this. If your kid can’t find a job because of obama’s lousy economic policies, parents think it’s a good thing that they can cover them. They don’t care about what it’s unfairly costing everyone in higher premiums. obamacare was designed to kick-in in increments.
Mike
Um...yeah...sure...
Then how come no Dem ran on this popular gem?
I wouldn’t use this story to wipe my butt with.
