N. Korea fires artillery towards S. Korean island, official says

SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Tuesday fired several rounds of artillery towards South Korean waters and an island near the tense west sea border, the South's military said.

The North's artillery shells fell at 2:34 p.m. in the South's waters off the island of Yeonpyeong, some of them landing directly on the island, said Col. Lee Bung-woo, spokesman at the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The South's military responded with its artillery firing.

Maybe a Freeper could go ahead and write the letter from the United Nations.

Just use the normal “condemnation” form - fill in the blanks.

At least the ROK military could move without him fettering it somehow and calling for a "time out" to take it to the UN.

The ROK is already considering taking it to the U.N. http://bit.ly/fsYNAM

Right. Lee Myung-bak is a coward. Better than commies or pinkos but nothing more.

Here's hoping the lull is because the good guys in the South broke all of the Nork’s toys that were firing at them. An obliterated target cant shoot back.

"...more shelling could come and Baekryong Island may be also under fire..."

But what is there to destroy in North Korea?

Let’s hope that is the case. I suspect some NK artillery tubes were hit, and destroyed. How many? We don’t know yet.

Artillery tubes, and naval bases.

When there was no international outcry after the NK sub was proven to have murdered all of those South Korean sailors, the commies up north are ready to take it to the next level—attacks whose origins there can be no doubt.

When the weakling in the WH fails to repond, it’s game on for the NK

It appears to have shelled South Korea for nearly TWO HOURS, ceasing around 4:30 p.m, about 45 minutes ago. They shelled over 200 units, about 60 to 70 private homes are on fire. One military casualty on the South Korean side, expected to escalate. South shelled the north in return. Has scrambled F-16. Air Force and Army and Navy all on war footing.

Korean defense commission (security council) not yet adjourned in Seoul.

I thought the biggest incident was the attempt on the South Korean president back in the 1960s

Look at the bright side: The North Koreans are firing from a fixed artillery position at a target they've had pinpointed for years. Even so, it's looking like less then half the rounds fired by the North have hit their target.

I like this comment and response on the Daily Mail website concerning this latest episode with the North:

Why does the free world put up with this odious little nation and it's evil regime?

- Nototheleft, London, 23/11/2010 07:15

Because it's supported and encouraged by the bordering odious large country and it's evil regime.

I doubt it. Honestly I don’t see anything coming from this. This is the third or fourth event - they sank a ship and killed 40 military people. South Korea is screwed. Nobody cares - nobody will fight back - nobody will do a damn thing about any of this.

A week from now - we won’t be talking about this.

Yawn
