Are those guys related to the contrail guys by any chance?

I worked with a guy who guarded the nuke artillery ordinance in Europe (in the 90s, I believe). Perhaps he was full of crap?

Also noteworthy, the forward deployed MEU, the Essex ARG, was around Okinawa yesterday.

I was underway every November when I was on ships in the Sasebo ARG from 1990-2001. They were probably disembarking Marines in Okinawa in order to be home in time for Thanksgiving. It will be interesting to see if they stay in Okinawa or return to Sasebo.

“Someone, someday is going to have to end NK as anything other than a tragic memory.”

I knew it was just going to get worse and worse on the Korean peninsula.

The terrifying thing is that we have a President who won’t do anything about it. We’ve got to act and we’ve got to act now!

Kim Jong-Il is really that crazy and he must be stopped at all costs.

The question is, how will the Chinese react? What is President Hu Jintao’s response? I know he’s got a cooler head than Mao had back in the 50s and definitely cooler than Kim’s.

Slightly off topic here, but I just heard Rush saying that China would probably go ahead and take Taiwan before Obama leaves office due to the fact that their would not be any consequences.

They won't need to. I think the native Taiwanese have already given up on any real chance the USA will defend them and the ethnic Chinese minority that holds most of the wealth and power is so far in bed with the Chicom govt that they'll "willingly" join the PRC. Not a shot will be fired.

It was the usual argument, but one guy claimed to really know. Said he was in the military and he would have known if we still had some tactical nukes. He went through all the nuclear weapons handling course, I guess. If South Korea is asking for tactical nukes, then we must have them. Thought it was kinda silly to get rid of the most usable nukes in the arsenal.

"... the ethnic Chinese minority that holds most of the wealth and power is so far in bed with the Chicom govt that they'll "willingly" join the PRC."

Pretty much. I was told by a Taiwanese engineer years ago that Taiwan will probably eagerly reconcile with China because Taiwan's economy is like this (he placed his hand at knee level) and China's economy is like this (he jumped up in the air holding his hand way above his head).

Go to defense of Taiwan? Without a shot needing to be fired? They're not just in bed with the PRC, most of those big name Taiwanese companies are already thoroughly integrated with China, and vice versa.

I asked him "Well, who in China still wants to take Taiwan by force?" and he said "A few elderly military nuts from the Mao era who don't have any business connections that create personal wealth. The young elites in China will shut them up in a second. Bad for business."

I asked "Well, aren't all the top corporate businessmen in China a bunch of generals in the PLA?" and he said "Same thing in Taiwan, only in the other army."

The ROK Army could easily stop the Norks aside from some minor local penetration - it’s large, professional, and well equipped. Plus it’d defending it’s own territory and falling back onto it’s own supply lines.

NK probably lacks the fuel to even get all of it’s motorized divisions to the DMZ.

” The ROK Army could easily stop the Norks aside from some minor local penetration - “

I don’t think anybody on any of these threads has any doubt as to the final outcome of an outbreak of open hostilities...

The issue is how much damage the NKs can inflict before they’re stopped - and that could be catastrophic....

Tacitus: He who desires peace, must prepare for war.

Classical interpretation: If you want peace, you must gain it by being prepared for a war, and thereby deterring your enemies and assuring your allies, thus creating an atmosphere conducive to peace.

Modern meaning: If you throw the word peace around a lot, and show everyone you haven’t got the cajones to fight, you’ll soon have a huge, honking war on your hands.

Hey - that’s an aggressive enough statement to give anybody even remotely connected to Foggy Bottom a debilitating case of ‘the vapors’....

As we speak, everyone above the rank of floor-sweeper is putting in for 6-months paid medical leave on the Riviera...
