N. Korea fires artillery towards S. Korean island, official says
SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Tuesday fired several rounds of artillery towards South Korean waters and an island near the tense west sea border, the South's military said.
The North's artillery shells fell at 2:34 p.m. in the South's waters off the island of Yeonpyeong, some of them landing directly on the island, said Col. Lee Bung-woo, spokesman at the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The South's military responded with its artillery firing.

Which may be why Eisenhower kept him entirely in the dark about the Manhattan project until just 72-hrs before they dropped the first bomb on Hiroshima.
My memory is only half as good as yours...
1986 was somewhat of a blur. A smokey, gin tasting, blur.
Then I got married....
.....McArthur managed to be completely surprised by the Chinese intervention......
Some say USMC Major or was it Captain Ken “Killer” McCoy provided the intelligence of a Chinese buildup but it was ignored by McArthur’s staff and he didn’t learn of it until way after the fact.
Those SK wargames are meant to run right through to the 30th. Wonder if they will continue ?
IF they carry on with them, good chance of futher attacks?
Marshall was the head of the Army in 1945. Ike was still in Europe.
Perhaps you mean Marshall or Truman.
I could be wrong.,...
If the training continues tomorrow, NK will resume attack. They gave their word on this at the State TV news broadcast.
I loved those books. Read the entire series in a weekend.
But....he later stuff really got repetitive. I guess you can tell the same story only so many ways.
ALERT: The United States says it is not moving additional military power into South Korea following artillery attack by North Korea.
Anyword from ROK media whether or not the drills/war games will continue? What do you think?
And China sure doesn’t want to rebuild the place. It’s such a basket case it would probably be one of the most expensive reconstructions ever. The infrastructure has been in a shambles for years.
Barring very luck break, Lee Myung-bak is politically DEAD as of tonight.
Then SK better not be surprised if they attack again. They should have waited until they got the Tactical Nukes, before they said they were gonna acquire them again. Not good to bluff when playing nuclear poker. Would hope the nukes are actually on their way, but whatever. If the South Koreans are gonna continue the exercises, then they should assume they will be attacked. So they need to be on the line ready to counter, otherwise stop the exercises.
Pentagon: No additional US troops to the region. Too soon to consider boosting deterrent.
Fox News
Yep. Wonder how the anointed one will handle this crisis? Like the rest I guess.
DU`ers siding with NoKo and claiming the war-mongering US provoked this.
I doubt that it will. If political situation continues to deteriorate badly for Lee tomorrow, it may happen the day after tomorrow.:-)
I see the endgame as this.
China, the US, and South Korea secretly draw up a plan to invade North Korea. Essentially North Korea will be split into a Chinese Zone and a US/South Korea zone, the main purpose is to avoid refugees fleeing into South Korea and China. Eventually the US pulls out once the situation is stabilized, and the North is jointly administered by China and South Korea, until the situation is stabilized enough for Korea to reunite. By then they will be in the Chinese sphere of influence, as part of the deal.
Very lucky break? I’m not sure I follow.
I think the only way for Lee to extricate himself is to interntionally and without too much delay order a reprisal against the NORKs.
By “lucky break” do you mean the NORKs go ahead and oblige Lee and fire off another round of arty?
” ALERT: The United States says it is not moving additional military power into South Korea following artillery attack by North Korea. “
IF this is accurate, and there’re no steps in motion to reinforce the 8th Army - and I’ve seen no reports to indicate preparations for evacuation — then are we forced to conclude that the sacrifice-in-place of 28,000 American Lives is considered ‘acceptable losses’??
I understand your comments re: Gen. MacArthur. However, in the case of dealing with NK and the Chinese, I believe he was correct and had he been allowed to do what needed to be done, many American lives would have been saved...as to how it would have all come down with the Chinese, only a higher being would be able to know. Thanks for relaying the personal observations of your relatives!
